Ready for 'abusive drunk dad simulator' with 'dissasociative kid' as the hero? Me neither but let's take that trip down memory lane.

Dontnod made one of the best episodic games of all time with Life is strange, and I donβt say that easily as The Walking Dead from Telltale Games had one of the best stories ever put into video game form.. With as good as TWD was, LIS got the nod as it was far superior in terms of gameplay and character development and the ability to rewind time was a tremendous gameplay mechanic..
With that said, Captain Spirit is a free side story of Life is Strange 2.. While LIS 2, isnβt quite as good as the original game, the new story tells a great tale of two brothers on the run from the law, after an incident forces them to flee their home and take up a life on the road.. Captain Spirit ties in with the second Episode,, as I have yet to play LIS2, I canβt post any spoilers about how the game ties in or anything else, but I can comment on this free introduction to LIS2..
You play the game as Chris, a 9 year old boy who like many kids his age wants to be a super hero, he manages to make the best of his everyday life using his imagination to create a fantastical world to escape reality.. Chris also lives with his Dad, who you also get a chance to meet while playing the game..
The story deals with pretty heavy subjects, which manifest themselves after only a few minutes of playing, the game could potentially be triggering to people who have dealt with abuse or domestic violence, so keep that in mind before playing..
Gameplay, is very similar to many other point and click adventure games in the Telltale style, you walk around, inspect items, interact with other items, collect things, and follow through with a set of 7 or 8 task designed to familiarize yourself with the controls and general feel of LIS 2..
Pros
Free,
Awesome Story
Tie in to LIS2
Great soundtrack
Cons
Denuvo,, (although not personally some people can see it as a con)
Lack of backstory on the characters (although that could be intentional as it ties into LIS2)
I wanted more,, would have paid for a full game of Chris and his family..
Recommendation
The game has the right price of free, while itβs not as flushed out as a featured paid product itβs certainly worth a play, especially if you plan to buy or play LIS2, as the game touts being tied into the main story.. (as of this review I donβt know how big or small the tie in is) To sum it up, if you like emotional deep stories, give this free game a play.. Then after youβre done, fire up steam and purchase Life is Strange 2, and help show the developers we love great story driven single player experiences..

Some companies just want to shovel shit down your throat and then charge you a hundred bucks for it. This game is touching and beautiful and you can just tell the developers put heart and soul into it, and what do they charge? Nada. Not a penny. This feels like a random person in a suit walking up to me and handing me a free croissant. I went into it kinda questioning why this croissant is free, just a little suspicious of the croissant, and then I realise the croissant was made just so that people would enjoy the new bakery down the street and the croissant is still delicious for it. I have lost the plot of my review and now I want to eat a croissant.

Worth playing before Life is strange two. Doesn't make much of a difference.but creates a bond that makes the game fuller in a way.
