After playing, I am really sorry I let this sit in my backlog for years.
Was it "perfect"?
No.
Was it worth playing?
Yes.
That's it- that's the review.
Lots of other reviews if you want spoilers, or want to argue over details.

The dad gets drunk and yells at you

"Why does he drink that if it just makes him mad?"

Worth playing before Life is strange two. Doesn't make much of a difference.but creates a bond that makes the game fuller in a way.

Some companies just want to shovel shit down your throat and then charge you a hundred bucks for it. This game is touching and beautiful and you can just tell the developers put heart and soul into it, and what do they charge? Nada. Not a penny. This feels like a random person in a suit walking up to me and handing me a free croissant. I went into it kinda questioning why this croissant is free, just a little suspicious of the croissant, and then I realise the croissant was made just so that people would enjoy the new bakery down the street and the croissant is still delicious for it. I have lost the plot of my review and now I want to eat a croissant.

It must be criminal to have a free game this well done, so thanks to the developers.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is a light hearted tale of a small boy living with his father who is facing troubles after the death of his wife, and having the burden of taking care of a son while struggling with loss and alcoholism. In a small community, this is even more evident that the family is in trouble, yet we see things from the eyes of a child going through this. Escapism through heroes and dreaming that one has superpowers must surely be common to many children and is used as a wonderful mechanism in exploring this tale.
This game is a short game but not short of content, soul and well written story line, it serves as a bridging episode to Life is Strange 2 where later the two brothers will meet up with the protagonist for more adventures. Will recommend this game whether as part of the whole series or as a stand alone.

"You will pay for what you did, Mantroid... I swear..."
It's always curious to see how an abused child can seek comfort in the power of their own imagination. Captain Spirit shows it in a raw, but also magnificent way. Amazing side story for LIS 2. It deserved a longer gameplay, though.
