Edit
Garrett, the Master Thief, steps out of the shadows into the City. In this treacherous place, where the Baron’s Watch spreads a rising tide of fear and oppression, his skills are the only things he can trust. Even the most cautious citizens and their best-guarded possessions are not safe from his reach. As an uprising emerges, Garrett finds himself entangled in growing layers of conflict. Lead by Orion, the voice of the people, the tyrannized citizens will do everything they can to claim back the City from the Baron’s grasp. The revolution is inevitable. If Garrett doesn’t get involved, the streets will run red with blood and the City will tear itself apart.

If you're expecting a polished game with fun mechanics like Dishonored, its nowhere close. Whereas Dishonored is more gameplay focused, this game is more like a walk through the park. The walk is nice if you like the park (Edit: don't know what i tried to do here forget it lol).
The story gets a lot of hate and although i agree the ending was a bit stupid the way it unfolds is well written. I mean its clearly been rewritten a couple of times but this game ISN'T a story driven game. The story is quite straight forward, i wouldn't call it "bad" because i believe that rather then being the main focus of the game, the story is used to guide the player through the world in a way it makes sense. Its the world around you that tells a story and the environment, or setting in which it does so, is very well crafted. ("the world" meaning both the environment and game mechanics combined)
Amazing environmental story telling. Instead of just outright telling you the lore of whatever you come across, its mysterious and leaves some things to your imagination which creates this feeling of uncomfort and intrigue as you sneak around and explore.
Even though you can "control" the world around you (Put out lights, distract guards, ect.) it never feels like you're truly in control. You never really have the freedom of movement since you always have to stay in the shadows and the guards will notice the lights turn of and light them back on relatively quickly. You never have the comfort of slowly sneaking around and playing the game your way, instead you're forced to take risks which means you can get spotted at any moment, making you feel like you're actually in danger and, again, creating that uncomfortable feeling. This, combined with the environment I mentioned earlier makes you feel like you're truly a part of the world and coexist with everyone else in it. The world doesn't revolve around you, you have to adapt to it. This perfectly fits the games dark, hopeless aesthetic and its a true immersive sim.

Were it not for the generosity of a Steam friend, I might have missed this game. 'Stealth' games are not my usual genre, so getting started in Thief was a bit intimidating. I soon found that I really liked it. From a first-person view, you run, jump, sneak, climb, rappel.. all the fun stuff. Throw in a cross bow with various arrows and a host of side quests with collectibles... it just does not get much better! Thief is beautifully crafted with a good story, interesting characters, detailed artwork, and a solid sound-track.
Since I am an 'adventurer-sans-action' gamer, I played this on the Easy/Rogue level, which allowed me to have more fun with less stress and stand a snowball's chance of completing the game.
The best part about Thief is that you can play it however you see fit. You can be stealthy or you can kick ass and take names. You can search for loot or simply charge through. Until you get to Chapter 7 (which is a temporary point of no return), you can take side jobs and complete them in any order. You can explore the city looking for secret places, documents, and collectibles. You can reply chapters multiple times to gather more loot or pick up missed objectives.
I started out very stealthy but evolved into a predator. There is something quite satisfying about clearing an area full of enemies with bow shots to the head and with surprise 'take-downs.' With all enemies incapacitated, it is a lot easier to explore for treasure! This probably does not say anything good about my own character but it sure made Garrett more successful!
You receive gold for items collected and jobs completed. With currency on hand, you can upgrade skills and equipment, or buy tools. Thus, it pays to repeat chapters in order to collect loot more than once and build up your reserves. Most chapters have a nice blend of guarded areas (stressful) and unguarded sections (explore at your leisure). As you complete chapters (the first time through), you get focus points which are used to improved your abilities.
There is a manual save function with multiple slots so I saved quite often. Thus, when disaster struck, I never lost progress. For me, playing with a keyboard and mouse was much easier than using my controller.
My only complaint about Thief is the map. The City is a labyrinth of streets, gates, buildings, tunnels, etc. You can be yards away from your objective with no obvious way to get there and the tiny in-game map is little or no help. Thanks to gamepressure.com, there are external maps that are invaluable when learning the lay of the land.
To summarize, I loved Thief enough to spend 70+ hours exploring and collecting. I put away any idea of getting 100% of achievements and set some personal goals (which I achieved). I never tired of it and enjoyed being able to play stealthily or aggressively. The Rogue setting makes the game accessible to gamers like me and I highly recommend spending time with Garrett!

Pretty wicked thief simulator for sure. There's a bit of a story to it but let's be honest we're here to steal stuff and boy is there a bunch of hidden treasures to steal. It's kind of an open adventure but there each map is sectioned off so you'll have to bear through a lot of loading screens while exploring.
Once you start a mission it's pretty well on-rails until you complete it but there are a bunch of secret areas in each stage to find. While checking these areas out you'll find coin, gear, and upgrades for your character.
The graphics still hold up pretty well for it's age and the whole game runs pretty smoothly. There are some older titles in this series so if you have fun with it maybe consider tracking those down too!

The most apparent thing is that the game feels like it was kind of rushed. Everything seems fine at first, but once you delve deeper, you notice that the Thief lacks polish. But anyways, it´s a good stealth game nevertheless.
What really stands out is the art direction of environment. The City is really immersive.
