Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam.
Is this game a masterpiece? It is a very good looking metroidvania, but without the typical combat. Actually, it is a quite unusual metroidvania. We play a little girl named Luminia (who first appeared in the game World to The West), who is hunted by humans and gets eaten alive by most animals or plants she encounters. She runs away as fast as she can from most foes, only sometimes she uses the environment to get a little revenge and kill an enemy. Lumina was flying along in her little zeppelin, when she got attacked and her blimp shot down in an abandoned region. The aim of the game is to return home. She is a Teslamancer, which means she controls electricity. She may not have an attack, but she starts the game with the ability to dash. Very soon she finds a dress with magical properties, which allow her to use magnetic force and polarities. At least I think that it is a magnetic force that allows her to run along walls or fly up in (magnetic?) currents. There is no speech in the game. There is also no text in the game. So some things might be a bit hard to understand - visual storytelling may be an art, but can't easily explain everything.
During the game, Lumina learns new abilities by obtaining new equipment, which allow her to access areas that have been so far unreachable. A typical metroidvania game element - but the abilities are not typical. No walljump or double jump, but fast swimming or a block-breaking slide. Even the fast travel is different than in most metroidvanias. There are no teleporting portals, but there is a central hub and cables that Lumina can move on using her electromagnetic powers. So she can reach the various regions in the game, like the castle, a snowy mountain or the flooded caves.
In the course of the game, you shouldn't expect direct confrontations with the enemies, especially at the beginning of the game. Lumina has no attacks and has to use her dash ability to move quickly and avoid certain death. She is attracted or repelled by certain platforms, and the main gameplay challenge is how to reach the next room while at the same time not getting killed by various deadly things (spikes, electricity fields...) or enemies. She often has to run while being chased by something deadly. While you learn to fight to survive in most metroidvanias, here you need to learn how to move fast, using your various abilities. There are some challenging, frustrating moments due to complex puzzle-platforming elements. Boss fights are also special, you have to think of ways to damage bosses without having an attack. If you die, you reappear at one of the many checkpoints. This is more like Limbo, there is no real punishment for dying, apart from being very annoying and having to go again through some places you already managed to survive.
Gamepad is of course supported. To return home doesn't take too long, but there are 81 cards are hidden in the game for completionists. Also other stuff is hidden and not necessary to finish the main story, like extra abilities. The visuals and animations are amazing, the game is really a little beauty.
Conclusion:
A refreshing but short metroidvania where you don't kill (most of) your enemies, but simply outrun (-swim, -climb, -jump, -fly) them. Actually, it is more of a physics-based puzzle platformer than a classic metroidvania.

Posting an early review for this one after 1.5 hours, because the world needs to know about Teslagrad.
So far, I can safely say that Rain Games not only made the sequel to the first game feel just as good and satisfying, but it feels *even better*. The formula stays the same, metroid-vania with elusive lore, challenging platforming and unlockables to get, banger soundtrack.
Don't skip this!
(PS: And if you didn't play the first game, they surprise-dropped a remaster as well <3. Love you Rain Games.)

Once again, Teslagrad delivers a beautiful and artistic story though an enjoyable experience. Teslagrad 2 is a worthy successor to the predecessor.
I still have much to unlock and explore, and thankful to have more so than the the first release. This map is larger and with more secrets and enjoyable powers to utilize in that exploration. However, I have completed the story. The story is enjoyable and family friendly, with cute and touching moments.
The music is well done and is something that I could just enjoy listening to while working on my YouTube channel. I get moments where the music reminds me of The Witcher, another soundtrack that I thoroughly enjoy.
The bosses this time are easier and harder. While in the first Teslagrad, I could time things a little more manually and handle the fights with practice. I felt that some of the fights in Teslagrad 2 were more chaotic in timing and lining up skills, while having less going on in the fight, as was sometimes the challenge in the first release.
In short, Teslagrad 2 is highly recommended, as is the Teslagrad. These games are a worry free experience and family friendly. The boss fights can get stressful, but do not let that deter you from the overall experience. If this old man can do it, I know you can too.

Surprised by some of these negative reviews since to me it was better than Teslagrad (which I played directly beforehand - it drove me to buy this immediately) in every way. Beautiful painted sprites, great visual storytelling and compelling level design.
Yes, it's pretty short, but it's all killer, no filler. The platforming feels better than the original and the art direction is amazing. The real final boss/true ending requires collecting all 81 optional cards, and unusually for one of these games I think that's actually worthwhile -- it's not too hard and optional areas are a *significant* percentage of the content. It's so gorgeous that running around is a treat.
The only quibbles for me are that a) I wish it were longer, b) I got stuck twice and could've used some hints about mechanisms like repelling from thrown axes (I genuinely thought I was soft-locked), and c) seriously couldn't the checkpoint have been *after* his little animation with the painting? Unusually for a Metroidvania-type game there are no fewer than four optional/secret traversal powers that I'm not totally sure about, since they do effectively let you bypass certain puzzles/platforming sections. But I guess I shouldn't complain because I could not have beaten the final boss without them!

If you aren't playing Teslagrad you are missing out.
The movement is so fluid and fun to play around with. The boss fights are so unique and epic. The music, backgrounds and general atmosphere are all top notch metroidvania without trying to be anything but itself.
This is everything I could have ever wanted in a sequel and more. Absolutely worth it at full price

Teslagrad 2 is a surprisingly fantastic platformer that has a brilliant movement system (once you unlock the initial abilities), great atmosphere with detailed background, and an enticing story said without words. The initial adventure in this game is short (3-4 hrs) but your adventure does not have to end since there are so much more to do after defeating the main boss. The second half of the game features 4 secret abilities unlocked behind simple time trial races, free roam to collect all the cards including one card hidden within an additional boss (golem) and discovering the "true ending" with a final boss that is very challenging. Exploring the map with this games movement system (specifically the slide momentum and upgraded electrical current dash) is a blast and reminds me of the fun continuous flow of movement seen in the Ori games. Would recommend this hidden gem to anyone that enjoys a solid platformer with great movement and puzzle mechanics.
