Super Dungeon Designer

I have spent many hours both building dungeons and watching this game grow from its alpha state to where it is now.
The developers are receptive, responsive, and willing to work on improving the game... and each new update brings great new QoL features and new toys to play with in building my dungeons.
Really looking forward to seeing where the development of this game goes through early access.

Great dungeon designer, there's a lot of pretty impressive levels that have been made already which is super cool. The tools are super intuitive, although I think having some advanced tutorials showing how to do some specific things such as a room locking when you enter it would be a good addition, since some of the ways that I implemented those were a bit 'hacky'.

The dream of a "Zelda"-Maker truly is alive. Last year Super Dungeon Maker was released and made a first step to create a niche genre of games that allow you to create top-down action-adventure dungeons. Earlier this year Quest Master war announced another particulary ambitious looking Maker-game of this kind. Shortly after I discovered this game by complete coincidence. I love this kind of games so I got it at release. I will share my opinion and experiences about this software that I made within a relatively short amount of time.
What is this game about?
This game is a level maker, not a game maker. You can create single levels that resemble traditional Zelda-like dungeons from older games. You have a bunch of tools at your disposal to do so: Enemies, obstacles, items, decorations and of course ground tiles (I guess you do have to walk on something). It is immediately noticeable how clean and well designed the menus are. You might think that would be to be expected, by I'd disagree. Maker games really benefit from a good and well layed out UI, because you constantly select different objects to place down in your dungeon. If the UI is good, that is fun. If the UI is tedious, that process becomes annoying. I can honestly say that Super Dungeon Designers' UI works extremely well, you don't have to dive into sub-menus, everything is just one click away and yet everything is organized in a clean and neat way.
The presentation of this game is simple. When I first saw this game there was a part of me that thought "looks a little bit like a flash game". After spending some time with it, I do think the game looks better than that, but this visual style might not be everyone's cup of tea. Personally, I habe come to like it, but I did notice that the character sometimes feels a bit... tiny in comparison to other level objects like blocks. The screen also feels very zoomed in which is certainly something to get used to (maybe a setting could be added to zoom out a little bit?). The music one the other hand is pleasing. There is not much of it, but what is here, is nice. I will say the tune that plays while you are exploring is probably my least favorite of the bunch as it feels the most generic.
What levels can you build with this tool?
I was surprised to see how much stuff there already is in the early access version of this game. Currently the enemy selection is certainly lacking a bit (7 + 1 boss) and foes generally feel like a fairly small danger to you unless a dozen of them are played and they belong to the "aggressive" sort. Aside from that most of the basics are covered though: Keys, locked doors, treasure chests, map and compass, various switches and items like bombs, bow and arrow and, of course, the world famous froggy glove! Even save points are here and accounted for which I didn't expect!
Two features stand out in particular: First, there is "Link"-system here that allows you to apply a basic event logic to objects in the dungeons. What are switches going to do? How to open that door? What is happening when this foe is defeated? The link system holds the answer for all of these things and works, for the most part, pretty well.
The other feature is especially neat: This game actually supports multiplayer! You can choose to design your level for one player only, but you can also enable it for up to four players playing together (locally or via remote play). That is a super cool addition, since "Zelda" games usually don't allow multiplayer experiences. So this game offers a fairly new approach to dungeon design that is currently fairly unique and allows for even more possibilities when creating a level!
What ISN'T great about Super Dungeon Designer (yet)?
I must say: For an early access game this software feels very polished. It does not at all feel like a beta or a buggy mess or incomplete or something like that. That by itself is impressive! But that doesn't mean the game is perfect, though I find it rather difficult right know to precisely pin down what improvements are needed. The reason for that is the fact that an editor-based maker game could always be updated to infinity and beyond.
Not everything one could think is a reasonable addition to this game, but there are a lot of objects I can think of that are not in the game yet, even tough they seem like pretty basic concepts: A shop for example or doors that open by spending a certain amount of currency. Conveyer belt ground tiles, moving platforms or just ground tiles that can be linked in general. A bridge like tile, that extends alongside a predetermined path, once it is activated. Health potions, a boomerang or a shield item. Ground that crumbles under your feet. I also didn't find a simple way to create a one-way-door and currently you can only make thing appear with the linking system - not disappear. By far the most important thing out of all of these examples: Stairs. Just a normal ground tile that makes use of the effect, that you can technically create rooms with different "layers". It's purely visual, but I absolutely need that :D
In other words: There is already a lot of stuff here, but I think more objects are still needed to be able to fully realize your dream dungeon.
On a side note the automatic system that creates rooms for your dungeon seems like a double edged sword: It makes it super easy to add new rooms but it can feels restrictive and makes creation of rooms that don't look like run-of-the-mill-rectangles a bit tedious. This is just something to get used to.
Conclusion
+ Despire early access this game feels very polished
+ VERY clean and well layed out UI
+ Multiplayer support from the very beginning!
+ Controller supports works well
+ A very cute and fun tutorial with a sentient racoon
+ Devs seem very friendly and responsive
+ Linking system allows for fun challenges in your dungeon
+ Great gameplay concept, good execution
+ No bugs encountered up until this point
+ A lot of objects already included...
- ...but more of them seem necessary
- Linking system cannot make objects disappear
- Enemies feels distinctly not very strong
- Only one dungeon theme (it's only a visual thing though, low priority for me)
- No stairs make my heart bleed so badly, I need a doctor
(- Exploration music isn't really my thing; personal preference, I guess)
In the end this game is a good purchase! At least for me that has been the case. The price point is fair and I hope that there will be many updates adding new options and objects to enhance the gameplay experience even further. If you enjoy creating and playing old-school zelda dungeons then this software is worth the purchase in my opinion.

I was a Kickstarter backer and I gotta say this is a great dungeon designer. I haven't had a lot of time to play it yet but from what I've experienced so far it is really good and I can't wait to see where it's going in future updates

Basically SMM but for Legend Of Zelda 1 dungeons.

An excellent game filling a niche that hasn't really been properly covered. The game offers an intuitive linking system that allows you to create very intricate puzzles and dungeons alongside easy tutorials on how to get the most out of it. Want a crazy multipart puzzle? Easy. Want to make a room that requires all enemies to be defeated before proceeding? Also easy. Additionally, you can make races against the clock for the player with time switches and crazy multi-phase boss fights with placed triggers. This game really takes ease of design to the next level for the builder. And if building isn't your thing but dungeon exploration is, I think you will find some very fun dungeons among the community to complete. The price tag is also reasonable, so give it a shot!
On a slightly different note, I also think it is important to mention just how great and communicative the dev team is. They are actively interacting with the community and keeping up with feedback/bugs. I've been following this game since some of its early playtests, and the devs have listened and implemented many of the community's ideas. They host regular dev streams and are very active on their discord. This dev team is very much worth supporting and will hear out any feedback you have on the game 100%!
