Shogunaria
Shogunaria is a love letter addressed to the great RPG/action-adventure games of the ‘80s and ‘90s. You can choose from four available characters, level up defeating monsters, power-up your weapon, and buy formidable upgrades.
The world is divided in 6 different zones with as many dungeons to explore. Traps and puzzles will make the adventure exciting. You can unlock new skills via the sacred statues to open up your way in a metroidvania-styled map.
Each character has their special moves, strengths and weaknesses, making the adventure different every time. Moreover, treasures and rewards are randomized, granting a high level of replayability at each playthrough. This will push you to discover the ending of all the 4 protagonists!
The fearsome Master Ghost has appeared in Yuni Country, spreading terror and awakening an impressive number of monsters. Not satisfied, he stole the 5 forbidden statuettes and summoned the demons sealed inside them.
Master Phantom’s purpose is to subjugate men to his power and defeat the boredom of an immortal life.
However, from afar comes a hope toward the village of Yuni…

It's like if zelda was grindy. Appeals outweigh the annoyances. solid 7/10, totally worth the price.

My Experience
Every time I peruse the Steam catalog I look for a few keywords specifically. One of these keywords is "Action RPG." Often, an Action RPG will let me create an interesting "build" while still being rather streamlined (think the Diablo series, Grim Dawn, etc.). I was drawn to Shogunaria first of all because I thought it might allow me to create such a build, but also because of its SNES aesthetic and its developer SEEP. I had previously played SEEP's Super BOO Quest and found it to be a fairly competent and lightweight stealth game.
Although Shogunaria didn't end up providing me with enough options to truly create a build, I ended up enjoying myself enough to come away with a positive impression of the game anyway. I liked the streamlined fast travel and save system, and scouring the game's environments for the golden hammers needed to upgrade my attack. Thorough exploration also rewards the player with little easter eggs, such as guest stars from other SEEP games, the SEEP brothers themselves, and a cave inhabited by aliens.
If you're looking for a simple, comfortable, and bug-free action game, Shogunaria has you covered. SEEP is a workhorse of a developer (they released four games last year) from whom you can always expect a certain level of competence.
