Reventure Steam Review
My Overall Rating: 6/10
Summary: Cautious recommendation. Reventure doesn’t cost much and offers at least 5 hours of enjoyable gameplay. Beyond that, however, the shortcomings of the game become more and more apparent. It’s not a bad game by any means, but certainly not an ‘overwhelmingly positive’ one either. I would rate Reventure as ‘mostly positive’.

Notes:The achievements are initially very accessible and easy to unlock, but become more and more tedious and complicated as the game progresses. I would highly recommend that you use a guide to avoid any time-consuming and painful trial and error loops. Unless that’s your thing, in which case: more power to you, I guess.
💚 What i liked: 💚
Reventure got a charming retro look and feel to it
Lots of, sometimes even a bit dark, humor and references to pop culture
Tight controls combined with some simple but clever mechanics
Catchy soundtrack which doesn’t get annoying, even after several hours of playtime
Features a hint system which guides you in the right direction without spoiling too much of the different endings
Twitch integration for streamers
Many unlockable skins for your character in-game and a ton more, thanks to the steam workshop
🔻 What i didn’t like:🔻
Not much of an adventure game but instead more of a puzzle platformer and collect-a-thon
Almost no enemy variety at all
Platforming sections are, for the most part, pretty basic and easy
Quality of life features are either missing or too basic, which leads to the game becoming more and more tedious as you progress
Extremely shallow ‘combat system’, if you even want to call it that
Difficulty varies somewhat, which can lead to frustrating moments towards the end of Reventure
In-Depth Review:
All things considered Reventure is a decent game in my book. Not a bad one, but not a great one either. As i wrote previously, i would rate the game as ‘mostly positive’.
First of all, let me clear up some things because the tags and description on the store page are somewhat misleading. Reventure is not an adventure game or even metroidvania. Instead, it’s more of a puzzle game with simple platforming elements.
Yes, the basic premise of Reventure is indeed that you play as the hero of the story, who has to rescue the princess from the castle of the dark lord, because the king requested your help in the matter. But that’s pretty much as ‘deep’ as the story gets.
Most of the gameplay resolves around exploring the in-game world, collecting different items and using those on different NPCs or to access different regions of the map. Ultimately most actions trigger an ending of some sort. The game will then play a short cutscene, you’ll respawn in the hero’s house and have to restart, more or less, from scratch. Some endings unlock new skins for your hero, others mildly change the in-game world or even unlock shortcuts. Most endings, however, have very little impact in the great scheme of things.
There is a grand total of 101 different endings which you can unlock as the game progresses. Overall, this makes the game feel more like a puzzle platformer or collect-a-thon rather than a traditional adventure game.
For the first 5 to 6 hours of gameplay, this isn’t an issue. Initially you will most likely enjoy the retro graphics, the catchy music, the snappy controls and so on. You will play around with different items and unlock various endings.
The Writing and humor are often on point. Reventure made me laugh out loud several times because of unforeseen twists or goofy endings. The game also breaks with genre conventions and lets you experiment to some extent.
This is the portion of Reventure, that i would rate as ‘Very positive’. I had lots of fun while unlocking the first 30 to 40 endings.
After that point, however, it all went downhill, the flaws became more and more apparent (and also annoying), the simplicity started to work against the game or at least didn’t do it any favors.
At some point, you start to realize that there isn’t much depth to the platforming and the combat.
The ‘combat system’ is especially bland. The only enemies i encountered during my playthrough were little, purple minions and the Dark Lord himself. With the minions, the combat boils down to spamming your sword attack and killing them in the process. Or you can avoid them and simply jump over them, like you would in a Super Mario game.
The endings become more complicated and lengthy. Which isn’t that bad, because you can kind of rely on the in-game hint system to give you... well, hints that point you in roughly the right direction. But they are also fairly cryptic, so there is still a bit of trial and error involved.
Keep in mind that you have to restart from the hero’s house every time you die or get an ending. Even if you unlocked it previously and only triggered it again by mistake.
Effectively, this means that you’ll lose 5 to 10 minutes of playtime every time you screw up. The fact that you have to repeat many steps several times for multiple endings, doesn’t help much either.
You’ll have to collect the same sword, traverse the same mountain, collect the same fricking grappling hook dozens of times. Just because so many endings utilize them in one way or another.
This is, combined with the simple mechanics, a huge drawback of the game. Most of the time, there is zero suspension while you are on your way to unlock the next ending. After a while you know exactly where all the stuff is located, which screen you will traverse and what awaits you on your journey. There aren’t any moments where you think “Oh man, that one enemy is tricky, will i be able to beat him on this run?” or “That one platforming segment is tough, how will i deal with that?”. Most of the time you simply go through the motions, unlock a (more or less) funny ending and simply start the next run.
Also, Reventure has this mechanic where every item that you pick up lowers your jump height. So you really have to learn the layout of the map and which items you need to pick up in which particular order or you might soft lock yourself. Which often times means that you’ll have to reset your run and start again, from the hero’s home.
Most of the NPCs are very bland and unremarkable. You can’t talk to them much, they don’t offer you any quests, you can’t trade with them, the possible interactions are very limited. Overall this makes the world feel strangely static and somewhat lifeless.
Reventure isn’t very challenging. Unless you go for achievement #101 which ramps up the difficulty big time.
Suddenly, the game expects you to clear a tricky platforming section. You only get one shot at this per run. So if you mess up, you’ll have to reset your run. In this specific case, this means you’ll have to travel through half of the in-game world for each try, which takes 7 to 10 minutes of your time.
I would recommend the game, but only to specific types of gamers. Obviously, streamers and youtubers can milk Reventure for a couple of streams and episodes and simply move on.
If you don’t care about completing a game, it might also be worth your time and money. The first 5 hours or so of gameplay are enjoyable and it isn’t like you are forced to continue playing.
On the flip side, i would not recommend this game to any completionists or achievement hunters. Reventure just feels too abrasive and annoying at certain points, at least to me. Your mileage might of course vary.

"It wasn't dangerous anymore to go alone"
When I just found the game, I wasn't sure if this is for me. It doesn't look like a regular game I usually play. But OMG, this is amazing. "Reventure" is a non main plot game, which you can finish in one hundred different ways. Every your movement causes a new funny ending. The entire game is filled with hilarious jokes and surely will make you laugh. When I turned off the game, I leaned back in my chair, took a deep breath and exclaimed "It was the best thing, that happened to me for the whole year!"
Graphics
The game is colorful and pretty looking. I'm a big lover of this 8-bit style. While being so simple it makes the entire world very funny and cute. Which is perfect for a game of this genre.
World
The world is ridiculously tiny. We have some characters, that stay still on their positions. We have items, which will be useful in our journey. And a couple of them we can even use for interacting with world's inhabitants. There is no world map or even mini-map. It kind of freaked me out first time, but then I've got my own map deep in my brain.
Gameplay
There are no hard battles until corns on your fingers. You will not also find any places, that require maximum concentration from you. The entire game is not difficult. "Reventure" is about exploring the world, searching for interesting locations, using items and getting fun. But, sadly, this causes a problem. I was really excited at the start. But when I found each place and every character, it was that fun no longer. Let's be honest, mouses never leave their houses. So, you have to follow the same way to the items each time you want to try a different ending. At some point it just became boring for me.
Even considering the little gameplay problem, I still want to call it a hidden gem. Because everything else is wonderful. And I'm sure, you'll get a lot of positive emotions while playing "Reventure".

May god help you if you are a completionist like me. Nevertheless it was very pleasant to go after every possible route and unlock new skins. It wasn't too easy nor a short game. It also wasn't frustratingly hard it has just the perfect level of difficulty to chill and have fun.

This is not a parody RPG, instead what you will find is a surprisingly deep puzzle platformer metroidvania, you will have to learn the layout of the world and the item locations, trying out new combinations to reach every possible ending.
And after most of the endings your character or the world will change, leading to new possibilites you couldn't do before, the humor is also on point.
Amazing game.

Review from Steam

Originally I saw this game on the Store page and was interested, so my boyfriend bought it for me. At first I was feeling like this was gonna be yet another generic platformer game with barely enough content to explore and generic gameplay, but no!
After playing it I realized that this game has quite a charm I was not originally expecting, it was so good that I spent hours trying to get all the ending and 100% the game. It was just that good, really unexpectedly good! I didn't knew a simple game with multiple endings could get me hooked for hours! Really recommended honestly <3
