Redeemer: Enhanced Edition
REDEEMER is an intense Brawler where you will punch, hack and blast your way through enemies using fists, hammers, fire arms and even the environment. It grabs the genre by the throat and drags it into 2017 in brutal style by adding a deep melee combat system and numerous unique types of kills. Redeemer is the brawler for those who love brawlers and have been waiting for a modern take on the genre! Play as Vasily, an elite operative who once worked for one of the biggest Cybernetic Weapons Manufacturers in the world. Officially working in security, you were tasked with infiltration, assassination, extortion and even torture. When eventually the corporation decided to turn you into one of its cyborg soldiers, you manage to narrowly escape to a secluded monastery deep in the snowy mountains. For 20 years you tried to find peace and harmony amongst your fellow monks, but you are still too haunted by your murderous past to find either.

This is one of those little gems you come across once in a while that the so called critics are luke warm about but its actually far better than they suggest. Redeemer is a violent little top down beat em up shoot em up game that's fun but also surprisingly difficult at times too. Its addictive wading your way through enemies and level design is creative and varied. On the downside I felt the controls could have been better. I can see why they opted for left shift to choose assault rifles and other weapons of that kind but its still awkward. The lack of maneuverability of your character is also a hassle when it comes to boss fights too. Its really becomes a reload and hope for the best slug fest. Still a lot to like here and not a lot of demand on even an average system. A thumbs up from me.

Gloriously good, solid controls. there was a lot of effort to make this concept work. the zoom in 3d kills and then back to nicely rendered top down view. the ragdoll physics are just right. you are a bad ass.
If you know of other games like this let me know. yes I have Hatred.

There's numerous spelling mistakes in the localisation, the story is super thin, and I had some weird issue where the resolution was perpetually scuffed and never let me get the whole game on the screen at once (with no option to choose between full screen, windowed, etc.), and there's a weird blurry foggy effect sometimes which just makes everything look washed out.
But none of that matter because ho-ly shit did these guys nail the mechanics. I've never felt more like Jet Li in a video game.
The moment to moment game play is absolutely fantastic. The melee feels weighty, the gun play is smooth, and sliding between the two, weaving in contextual environmental finishers and attacks makes the whole thing feel super slick.
Progression is great - enemies get more interesting, but they never turn into major bullet sponges, the character levelling serves the game well, it's simple and unobtrusive, but meaningful enough to bother with.
The only thing which was a bit underwhelming from a game play perspective was the bosses, purely because they are extremely simple. But as they are only really a minor part of the experience, that wasn't a major issue.
I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in twin sticks or beat 'em ups. Great game. I only meant to play for 15 minutes test test it as I bought it along with a bunch of others in the summer sale. Ended up spending 5 or so hours playing through the whole thing in a single sitting.

Just the right amount of gameplay. The game does have some difficulty spikes and is short with the ending. Bring on the sequel

"Redeemer is a brawler/top down shooter with lots of heart. A visceral treat with constant finshers, parries, environmental kills and more. I've finished this game twice and I'll be coming back again."
A good brawler/top down shooter that constantly has you engaged
There is always something to do in this game from moment to moment. While it does have a story, most of your time will be advancing through the level taking down enemies as you wish. All along the way whatever you do earns experience so you can level up that weapon/body part/gun and decide how to specialize. It is a good system in a short game like this and works well and keeps you engaged. You'll constantly be getting new guns and moves to use throughout the entirety of the game so long as mix up your fighting style.
Story
It is told through animated graphic novel looking images and audio. All the audio is well done and the images look really well made with great contrast and lighting. It won't be winning any awards but it is engaging just like the combat and does advance the plot for all the killing you'll be doing along the way.
Multiplayer
I didn't try this out myself but the Store Page does list that it has co-op. I could see this being fun with another person and if I try it, I'll update the review.
Value
I think this is a very entertaining game for under $10 USD, made even better by the deep sales it goes on. I've beat the game twice and I'll be back for more. I like games with finishers and this game has them aplenty.
Controller
I played with a controller and it worked great. All buttons mapped are intuitive once you get used to it. I didn't have to change or customize anything. Very responsive and outside of finishers you don't get locked into a bunch of animations that get you killed.
Achievements
I've played through the game twice and barely have over half. This game has a good bit of things to do if you are an achievement hunter.
Bugs/Glitches/Crashes
I experienced none. I've beat it both on Windows 10 and 11. I never encountered any problems at all. All auto-saves worked well and resumed right where they left off.
Closing comments
Sobaka Studios, the developer behind this game has developed a really good brawler/top down shooter. It feels unique and plays fast and fluid. They gave the game more depth than they even needed to with an upgrade system. It has replayability and they even added co-op. The graphical style should hold up well over time. Lastly, the game feels unique compared to most other games that have finishers in them. I really enjoy this studio and the games they make so if you enjoy this one you might want to look into one of their other titles.
