It's buggy sometimes but the game itself is pretty fun. Beautiful scenery for such a janky game.

This is one of the best survival games you will ever play.
When I was in high school (2012) I found this game on the apple store and it was so fun I put in the time and beat the entire game. 10+ years later, you wouldnt believe my excitement when I found it had been ported to the steam store. It was an insta buy for me.
Radation Island is a traditional survival game, but it is so simple that it makes the game really fun. Theres really no hard grinding, all the items are fairly easy to get, there are no overpowered enemies, and the crafting system is really simple and easy, and the world is so massive you can spend hours to complete the main objective of the game.
First: the world. Its absolutely huge, and made up of 4 islands (3 large and one small) in the shape of a radiation symbol. It has beaches, tall mountains, lakes, rivers, and jungles. There are buildings spread out everywhere, from small fishing villages to military complexes. The game features all sorts of weather effects and honestly, they are quite beautiful. The graphics are comparable to something a bit better than original xbox or ps2 games.
The game is really forgiving, theres no grinding for stuff, and if you die, you will keep your inventory and occasionally lose what you had equipped. Endgame guns are easy to come by, and gathering items is really easy. Enemies arent very difficult either, they can all be killed in 2 - 3 shots of any medium to high tier ranged weapon. The game has basic status effects which can kill you, such as hunger, viral infections, and cold, but they are all really easy to curb if you are prepared. If you die, you will respawn at your bed with all your stuff. You can place beds in any building throughout the map, and the map is full of them.
The game has its own story - its basically the Philadelphia Exoeriment, except the Japanese attempted it on a huge island chain and everything went wrong and everyone has turned into zombies. The game has you follow an objective of turning off massive tesla towers on each island. There are about 5 on each island, and as I said earlier, each island is massive. You have to do a fair bit of walking to get to each one, and its not always a straight walk. There is also teleport points spread throughout the map, and once you discover them you can travel between them with no penalty at all.
The crafting system is really simple, there are basic tiers of items, and some are uncraftable but easy to find. The game will never force you to grind or punish you in order to get items. You dont even have to make use of every feature the game has to beat it, which lets players go as deep or shallow into the games mechanics as they want. You can even build structures, but you are perfectly capable of surviving using the pre placed structures.
I have to say, playing this game even after 10 years, I still feel the same excitement as I did back in highschool. Its very relaxing compared to other survival games, while still retaining a fair bit of challenge, as well as all the other gameplay mechanics youd expect from a traditional survival game. If you really enjoy survival games, dont miss out on this one. Its cheap, fun, and will give you hours of enjoyment.

cleared the first and the center islands. Truly a unique experience. It amazes me how this game was initially created for mobile platforms and only some time later ported to pc. This just shows how developers on mobiles cared about their craft, considering that this game was released on devices like iphone 6 and 7, whereas now, having phones that are 30 times more powerful, the only games we see on them are "2d or one click or gacha or all of the above" games

I believe I got this game for dollar or two. This is a bare bones simple first person survival game. However I somehow found myself liking this more than I thought I would. Several others of my family tried it out and had fun with it. Dont expect alot just enjoy it for what it is.

Radiation Island is an open-world survival adventure developed and published by Atypical Games that transports players into a mysterious alternate reality born from the infamous Philadelphia Experiment. Instead of following a heavily scripted journey, the game encourages players to carve their own path across a sprawling island where abandoned military compounds, forgotten villages, dense forests, frozen mountains, and hazardous wastelands hide both valuable resources and unsettling secrets. The premise immediately establishes an atmosphere of isolation and mystery, giving every expedition a sense of purpose as players search for answers while trying to survive in an unforgiving environment.
The game's greatest appeal comes from its emphasis on exploration and self-sufficiency. Every corner of the island offers opportunities to discover useful equipment, hidden bunkers, research facilities, and crafting materials that gradually improve the player's chances of survival. The world feels surprisingly expansive, with diverse landscapes that prevent exploration from becoming repetitive. Whether climbing steep cliffs, crossing lakes, venturing into caves, or scavenging through abandoned structures, the environment constantly rewards curiosity with new resources or unexpected dangers.
Survival mechanics are woven naturally into the overall experience. Players must carefully monitor hunger while gathering food through hunting, fishing, and foraging. Collecting wood, ore, herbs, and other materials becomes essential for crafting increasingly advanced equipment, weapons, armor, and supplies. Radiation zones, harsh weather conditions, and environmental hazards force players to prepare before venturing into unknown territory, creating a satisfying balance between risk and reward. The progression system steadily unlocks better tools and stronger gear without overwhelming newcomers, making each improvement feel meaningful.
Combat provides enough variety to keep encounters engaging throughout the adventure. Players defend themselves against aggressive wildlife including wolves, bears, crocodiles, and mountain lions, while abandoned facilities introduce dangerous undead enemies guarding valuable loot. The gradual transition from primitive weapons to bows and firearms delivers a rewarding sense of advancement. While enemy behavior occasionally lacks sophistication and some encounters can become repetitive during longer sessions, resource scarcity ensures that combat remains tense, encouraging players to think carefully before wasting ammunition or engaging unnecessary fights.
The game's atmosphere deserves particular praise for successfully blending survival with science fiction and subtle horror. The mysterious alternate dimension is filled with strange anomalies, abandoned experiments, and remnants of civilization that hint at a much larger story without relying on excessive exposition. The day-and-night cycle significantly influences gameplay, as darkness increases tension and visibility becomes limited. Combined with dynamic weather effects and immersive environmental audio, the island often feels genuinely lonely and unpredictable, encouraging cautious exploration rather than reckless wandering.
Considering its origins, Radiation Island presents an attractive world with impressive environmental variety. Forests, beaches, snowy peaks, rivers, and underwater locations each possess their own visual identity, helping maintain a sense of discovery throughout the campaign. Water reflections, changing weather, and expansive draw distances contribute to the immersion, even if some character models, animations, and textures reveal the game's age. The visual presentation remains more than capable of supporting the adventurous tone the developers aimed to create.
One of the game's strongest qualities is the freedom it grants players. Objectives rarely dictate exactly how progression should unfold, allowing experimentation with exploration, crafting, and survival strategies. Some players may spend hours building equipment and gathering resources before advancing the main objective, while others may focus on uncovering hidden locations and story elements. This flexibility gives Radiation Island considerable replay value, as different playstyles naturally lead to different experiences across the island.
The experience is not without shortcomings. Inventory management occasionally feels cumbersome, enemy AI can appear simplistic, and some gameplay systems lack the refinement found in more modern survival titles. Certain mechanics also reflect the game's mobile roots, making a few interactions feel less polished than those in contemporary PC releases. However, these flaws are generally outweighed by the game's enjoyable exploration, satisfying crafting system, and consistently engaging survival loop.
Radiation Island successfully combines open-world exploration, crafting, survival mechanics, and mystery into an entertaining adventure that remains enjoyable years after its original release. Its emphasis on freedom, environmental storytelling, and gradual progression creates an experience that rewards patience, preparation, and curiosity. Although it may not match the technical sophistication of larger-budget survival games, it delivers a memorable journey through a fascinating alternate world filled with danger, discovery, and adventure. Fans of exploration-driven survival games will likely find plenty to appreciate in its expansive world and rewarding gameplay systems.

I really like this game! It's very simple, but not blow-over easy. It has great atmosphere that scared me as a kid when I played it on mobile years ago and great atmosphere that scares me now. Awesome experience!
