Neon Abyss
Combining furious run ‘n’ gun action and deep, roguelike mechanics, Neon Abyss pits you as a member of ‘Grim Squad’ – a task force set-up by Hades himself to infiltrate the Abyss and defeat the New Gods. Death is not the end as every time you die, you’ll find yourself more empowered than before. As you progress through each dungeon, random item drops will be key in helping you infiltrate the Abyss and these passive effects can stack between every item. With no limit to how many can apply; a wide variety of combinations will make each run unique. With each run, you will be able to unlock new rooms, items, bosses, special rules and even new endings! This means each dungeon is unique and expandable, being tailored to your own specific playstyle. Hatch and Evolve Pets If you need some company on your journey into the depths of the abyss, or just some additional firepower or assistance, eggs can be found which will turn into a random pet that has a special ability and will evolve the longer you survive. Mini-Games Take a short break from slaying minions and take part in random mini-games that will also bag you some loot! Jump into Piano Performances, Meditation Challenge, Dance Competitions, and more – staying alive just got a lot more interesting!

This is a fine game, I just really wish you could save and return to runs like in other roguelikes I've played. I don't always have time to definitely sit down for 2 hours and play videogames.

It's surprisingly competent, my initial playthrough wasn't that great, and I instantly dropped it. As I embarked on a quest to review every little game I have, I decided to give this another try before reviewing it. This time, it was better, I played it on the steam deck, and somehow, it's just better. I like it, the platforming and gunplay are alright, and the art style is great

The games first impression is so much fun! It is your typical rougelike game, lots of weapons, lots of upgrades, lots of enemies and randomly generated dungeons.
There are so many good upgrades, if you get a good run, you'll feel invincible, while other runs can feel impossible. There are a lot of negative combinations for items aswell, so as long as you don't know what which item does, you'll suddenly end up for example with explosive shots that constantly kill yourself, because you got no item yet to protect you from your own explosions, but your weapon hits the entire screen.
It does get repetitive after a while, as you'll always play through the same levels and same bosses until you encounter the last, a new boss for each run. There isn't much new stuff in terms of the story, just jump in, do the next run! The runs take about an hour, can be much longer if you get loads of money and play all the minigames with it. Would have prefered it to be a bit shorter like it was the first few runs tbh. So why is it getting longer after the first runs? Because at first it stops at level 5, then level 6, then 7 and lastly you get until level 8/9 for the last bosses. These last bosses also have special conditions for meeting them, so you might not even get it done to get to them in the run.
The one thing, I feel like makes this game harder than it should, is how many weapons and upgrades boost not only your damage, but your visuals aswell. Your shots get bigger, they multiply, they bounce around. Sometimes makes it impossible to see enemy projectiles. Occasionally I get such big shots, can't even see the big bosses in their rooms, because my weapons just blank out the entirety of the screen. I just keep firing and hope that they die, before I die, because I can't see what they're even doing.
Because of these things, the first few times playing this, feel more fun imo. Even though you have no idea whats going on, you can at least still follow it and are done with a run quicker aswell. I have not yet played the the sequel to this game, I wanted to start with this one, but it definitely sold me on getting it!
Even though you can select different difficulty options, it also has another type of difficulty changes going on. If you win lots of times in a row, you get harder runs, if you lose, you get easier ones. There are little dots over the difficulty setting showing you how hard your setting is. It ranges from 1 to 5 dots. 5 dots on easy are even harder than 1 dot on normal. I don't know where exactly it changes, but it is something to keep in mind. Or maybe you can just lose a few runs on purpose, if you don't like how hard its gotten. I liked the difficulty on normal, but I have not been able to clear all the bosses. I am giving up here, as I don't like doing 1 hour runs, just to not be able to get to the right boss at the end, or if I do get the right boss, not have enough hearts to survive the fight.. I guess, I am simply not good enough, but I had my fair share of fun!

A strangely addictive roguelite soaked in neon colors.
There are so many different weapons and items....making every run feel fresh and exciting.
The game has a huge replayability thanks to the way it's designed and played.
A very good price for so much game time.

Basically Rogue Legacy, except with guns.
Personally, I love it. I'm not sure what new NA2 is going to bring to the table, but if you see this game on a discount (and you will), and you enjoy controller-based platformers with guns, pick this little gem up.
Oh, and the OST is banger too.

I originally bought it because why not it's on sale. I meant to play 5 minutes it's been 3 hrs I need to hurry and write this review so I can get back to the Neon Abyss. Seriously it's a great game, awesome music, buy it before the sale is over. Lol.

This game is an awesome and chaotic mess. Reminds me of the Metal Slug games but with more emphasis on the roguelite-ishness with tons of relics/items to make each run different. Speaking of the items, there are 420 relics, weapons, and pets to find and try out.
