It's a GREAT game but I think it missed becoming a widely-popular speedrunning game for 2 reasons:
1. The default mode is just very jank. Swerving to pick up (almost uncapped) boost speed is - for most - a very unsatisfying way to cut time. Largely because it ends up invalidating most of the map and routing that makes it fun. Double jump mode should be default... it just plays a lot better overall.
2. Times become invalidated due to patches tweaking the 'balance' and fixing bugs. This isn't uncommon in games but it's usually the case with games that aren't intended for speedrunning. With Hot Lava, they really should have taken a lot of care to preserve the timing between patches.
But it's still a great game with a load of excellent courses. Highly recommended if you have a few friends to compete with.

It's a really fun parkour game. I used to play this all the time when I was younger. I really recommend this game for those who love parkour games.

I've played this game since i was little. It's a very fun game in my opinion, but that might just be because i like parkour platformers like this.

really fun speedrun platformer game you've probably seen on youtube. plenty of levels to go through with so many options of navigation + cool side objectives, multiplayer, and workshop support! highly recommended if you buy on sale.

Hot Lava is basically a fully realized, playable version of the childhood game we all played in our living rooms and it absolutely nails the vibe.
The nostalgic atmosphere is honestly the best part of the whole experience. From the second you boot it up, it feels like waking up early on a Saturday morning in the late 90s. The game completely leans into that era complete with a fake Saturday morning cartoon intro and action figures. The levels are set in places like messy childhood bedrooms, school gymnasiums and playgrounds but everything is scaled up so you feel tiny. It perfectly captures that specific feeling of childhood imagination.
As for the gameplay, it's essentially a first-person parkour game that plays a lot like the old CS:GO bunny-hop or surf maps. It takes a little bit of practice to get used to the momentum and the physics but once you find your flow, swinging from monkey bars, jumping across desks and sliding down banisters feels incredibly smooth and satisfying.
It can definitely get a little frustrating later on if you're trying to speedrun or get perfect times on the leaderboards, as one missed jump sends you straight into the magma. But if you just want to bounce around a beautifully designed, retro-fueled world and relive being a kid for a few hours, it’s a genuinely great time.
