As the enigmatic Hitman, you must use stealth and tactical problem solving to enter, execute and exit your assignment with minimum attention and maximum effectiveness. For a price, you have access to the most devious devices, but how you use them will determine if you retire as a millionaire or get permanently retired.
The Hitman is the world’s most accomplished and wealthy assassin; however, he is plagued by a troubling past of deception and genetic butchery. The ingenious story will evolve over five chapters of heart-stopping action. Remember, the world of contract hits rewards a quick intellect more than a quick trigger finger.

Replaying this 20 years later, this game is THE *HIT!
It felt way less restrictive than later three entries: you can sprint around as much as you want (and most of the time you should) without worrying that guards will start shooting you for no reason, you can walk close to people without them getting mad (for the most part), most missions have multiple maximum score solutions (score in this game being how much equipment is unlocked for the next mission).
The difficulty setting in this one is a bit weird in that I didn't really feel the difference between Easy and Hard, but on the bright side, higher difficulties in this one don't punish you for trying to be stealthy and in fact there are more advantages to being stealthy on Hard, as everything does more damage, but your average guards don't scale up in perception to the point of omnipotence. So this one is very much beatable on Hard, in fact I'd recommend it to be played on Hard, personally.
So if you ever feel like playing one of the older Hitman games, but are anxious about the difficulty in them, definitely give this one a shot! This is as Hitman as it gets, as in this game, stealth solutions are simple and fast, as long as you take your time and try stuff out before going for the control run, yet guns blazing type solutions are pretty tough to perform, requiring perfect aim to succeed.

Now for some techy stuff:
I've just finished my second run through this game at the moment of writing this. First one being vanilla on Windows 10 in 640x480 res, second one with Widescreen Fix mod in 640x480 res. Did this specifically to compare and relate my experiences.
To be honest, if you don't mind black borders and poopier looking graphics, just go for vanilla. It does the job. The worst part about it to me is the text. I don't know who came up with this, but half the text in this game is unreadable unless you reeeeally get used to it. Also UI is terribly small, even in 480 res, and the text issue persists with UI.
The Widescreen Fix is interesting though. It's true widescreen, no cropping, no stretching, literally just removes black borders. Also makes the graphics look a bit prettier if you follow the installation instructions. But alas, it comes with a huge drawback... For some reason, I bet due to the way they implemented screen widening, mouse sensitivity becomes weird. I assume it becomes "stretched" with the screen, and as a result, horizontal sensitivity becomes noticeably higher than vertical. It's nothing you can't get used to, but it felt really awful after playing Vanilla. Toning down sensitivity slider helped a bit, but didn't ever solve it completely.
Now, enough with the negatives, as there are some other huge positives, besides graphical improvements! They actually fixed the damn UI and text! It's actually bloody readable for once! And UI is scaled up a bit as playing in 480 res I could actually see the icons and everything.
So in the end I'm quite conflicted as to which version I liked more. I'd say if it's your first time - going for Widescreen Fix is fine as it improves some issues this game has. But if you want to replay the game as it was intended, or if you find sensitivity issues of Widescreen Fix annoying - Vanilla is for you.
Ok, if you've read this far, I'm quite shocked, but thank you :) Hope you've found this helpful!

PLAY HITMAN CONTRACTS INSTEAD
this game hasn't aged well, fortunately hitman contracts is nearly a full remake of this game (some missions combined in contracts from this)
i would skip this entry it is really bad, controls are pretty broken, graphics and resolution are old (fixes are available). I can't comment on audio as i had it on mute but like i said play contracts its much better quality of the original game with added extras. rating up because the game is 23 years old and obviously would of been great in 2000

I attempted to play this game twice before, got frustrated with the controls and the incompability, then uninstalled it. But couple of days ago, I had this itch to play a Hitman game and wanted to give the og another shot. I found solutions online for the optimal way to run this game, and also came across a good guide with hints about the levels. Now I was set.
It turns out, this game is an absolute gem. Each level is like a different puzzle, and when you figure out the solution, a mission only lasts about 5 minutes. The fun part is figuring out the ways to get the objectives done. Each level has a clever, unique solution that sets itself apart from the rest. When you're very close to beating a level, your heart pumps up because you know if you fuck up, you'll start from the beginning. This game is brutal, sometimes irritating, but it is definitely a thrilling ride.
I totally recommend this game. But one who wants to play this game must take it easy on themselves, this game don't hold your hand at all and the best way to enjoy it is to give Anamon's guide a check in my humblest opinion. A very enjoyable game, a pearl is lying beneath the rough grubby shell.

The game works on windows 10. This game is very hard and clunky. It was the first game in the franchise so of course it is. I found this game to be very fun but some people hate it. I've never played a hitman game before but I do love old games. I find old games very charming. They are a part of history and video games are art. This game can be very challenging if you don't know what you're doing. The Hitman games have always been puzzle games. How do you take out the target? What's the best weapons to use? How can I make the mission easier? Am I being efficient with my time and resources? How can kill this guard and not get caught? Turns out there's always an easier way to accomplish the task if you use your imagination. Unless you've already mastered the game of course...

First of all, don't try to be a hero, because enemy AI will destroy you.
Shooting is satisfying, movement and interractions are thought out. Probably the only 3rd person game, in which you can actually shoot behind cover (without gluing yourself to it), and also shoot in every direction. It has physics and ragdols, including the fabric physics. You can pass this game even without knowing the best solutions to levels (like I did long ago as a kid), but discovering them on your own is rewarding. There's just something special in succefuly managing to kill your target in this game, like in the harbour mission, and do everything else. And the soundtrack is excelent.
