Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
Blood Dragon is a stand-alone expansion of Far Cry 3, meaning players do not need the original game to play it. Gameplay, though akin to Far Cry 3, using the same engine and general mechanics, is streamlined to provide a more linear experience. The skill tree, instead of a chosen path down three "ways of the animal", is replaced with a simpler leveling system that automatically unlocks benefits. The crafting is removed completely. The gameplay is open world, first-person shooter, with the same vehicles from Far Cry 3. Players will find themselves using high powered explosives, heavily modified firearms, and a large knife in order to kill their way through the main missions. Side missions involve liberating garrisons, killing rare animals, and saving hostages. Stealth is rewarded with extra Cyber Points, the equivalent of Experience Points. The game also includes lots of hidden collectibles which, when found, unlock helpful rewards to assist with play.

Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon was made in a time when even big Publishers threw money at a studio when they told them about a fun idea and let them get to work. And thanks to this, we are blessed with the absolute gem Blood Dragon is. And it is rightfully very beloved.
The best way I could describe the game is with a recipe:
Step 1. Add all super manly 80s action movies into the bowl, the more muscles, the more guns, the better
Step 2. Add Cheesey one liners, the more the better
Step 3. Add Guns, and not just normal guns, be cool, add Lazers! (with a Z that is important)
Step 4. Add a love interest who is betraying her boss for the greater good
Step 5. Add a manly muscular bromance,
Step 6. Add neon, neon everywhere. Neon sky, neon soldier, neon enemies, neon weapons, if it has no neon, throw it away, or add neon.
You say animals have no neon fur or eyes? Jokes on you, now they have.
Step 7. Add a good amount of humor, don’t take yourself serious at all, make fun of it. People love that. (rightfully so)
Now throw it all into a mixer and blend it well together. Once done, compile it, throw it in some storage device and sell it.

For real, if you never played Blood Dragon, do it. It isn’t super long, but it is hecking good fun, and it has dragons, neon dragons. And they shoot lasers, what else can you really ask for?

The tropical paradise of the main game is replaced by an eternal night illuminated by blinding lasers and synth-wave aesthetics. It’s a total visual overhaul that turns a familiar landscape into a bizarre, retro-futuristic playground.
The writing is top-tier parody. From the non-stop, gravelly one-liners to the constant throwbacks to VHS-era tropes, the game never lets up. The tutorial alone is a masterpiece of meta-comedy that should be studied by every developer on how to poke fun at gaming conventions while actually teaching the player. And the music? The synth-heavy soundtrack is the perfect pulse for Rex "Power" Colt’s mission.
One of the best things about Blood Dragon is its brevity. In an era (even in 2026) where games feel like they need to be 100+ hour commitments, completing this in roughly 10 hours is refreshing. It’s the perfect "short-form" Far Cry. If you want the satisfying gameplay loop of FC3 but don't want to commit to a long-winded story about tattoos and native warriors, this is the ultimate alternative.
There is something genuinely special about projects like this. It’s lean, it’s loud, and it’s unashamedly "stupid." I originally played this gem years ago on Uplay. I recently bought and downloaded it on Steam to properly finish it and hunt the achievements. Unfortunately, classic Ubisoft launcher antics struck: the autosync immediately unlocked every single Steam achievement the second the game booted. It felt incredibly sus and honestly a bit sad, since I wanted to earn them all over again by myself (but then again I had the same issue with Far Cry 3 few days ago).
But I didn't let that stop me. I still went ahead and 100% completed the game anyway. I collected absolutely everything and even uploaded a screenshot of my final stats to the community hub to prove it.
As for the game itself? Far Cry: Blood Dragon is a glorious, old-school tribute to VHS-era action blockbusters. It delivers pure, unfiltered epic action backed by a phenomenal soundtrack. The entire experience is packed to the brim with hilarious jokes and clever references to cult classics like Predator, Terminator and even Star Wars.
Unlike the main Far Cry series, this isn't a serious or gritty game; it's a neon-drenched, over-the-top sandbox of pure fun. If you love explosions, retro-futurism, and cheesy one-liners, this is a must-play.

A very short, but sweet Far Cry experience. Definitely worth it for the price! To help it run better as it is old, Limit it's affinity in Task Manager to 4 cores (CPU 0,2,4, and 6) and it will immediately go over 100+fps
