Faking to Dance is an original song by Breaking Forms, a couple’s band based in Boston that mixes powerful vocals and intense sounds.
This song is a bizarre adventure with strong percussion and a powerful middle vocal section. The sounds are overlaid over a screaming guitar that pummels the song through insane landscapes. The visuals carry you through lunar mountains, space stations, geometric tunnels, and a swarm of dancing robots that explodes in cubism.
At Datawheel we bring you original songs from new artists in unique visual experiences designed to match the mood, speed, and rhythm of every track we release. Lean into the movement. Experience the Video Clips of the 2020s, with Datawheel

Faking to Dance is an unconventional virtual reality experience that sits somewhere between an interactive art piece and an immersive music video. Instead of building its identity around objectives, levels, combat, puzzles, or scoring, it uses VR to place the audience directly inside a visual interpretation of an original song by Breaking Forms. Developed and published by Datawheel, the project is clearly more interested in exploring the relationship between music and virtual environments than delivering the mechanics expected from a traditional game. Understanding that distinction is essential, because its appeal depends heavily on whether the player enjoys experimental audiovisual experiences.
Music forms the foundation of the entire production. Strong percussion, energetic guitar work, and increasingly prominent vocals determine the pace and atmosphere of the journey. Rather than functioning as background music for unrelated gameplay, the song dictates what the player sees and how the environments evolve. Visual changes are designed to complement shifts in musical intensity, creating a synchronized performance where audio and imagery feel like two parts of the same composition. The result resembles stepping through the screen of an experimental music video and occupying the strange spaces that would normally exist only as edited sequences.
The environmental variety is particularly effective considering the compact scope. Players are transported through unusual locations that include lunar mountains, futuristic space stations, geometric tunnels, and increasingly abstract spaces. Dancing robots eventually become part of the spectacle, while Cubist-inspired imagery contributes to the deliberately surreal presentation. There is little concern for realistic continuity between locations. Instead, scenes change according to artistic and musical requirements, giving the experience a dreamlike quality where one strange visual idea can immediately transition into another.
Virtual reality plays a fundamental role in making these scenes effective. Looking around these environments creates a stronger sensation of scale and presence than simply watching the same material on a monitor. However, prospective players should recognize that being inside an interactive medium does not automatically translate into deep interaction. This is primarily something to observe and experience rather than master. There are no complicated systems demanding extensive practice, and the emphasis remains on movement through the audiovisual presentation rather than completing challenging gameplay sequences.
This limited interaction represents both a strength and a weakness. On the positive side, virtually anyone familiar with VR can understand what is expected without sitting through lengthy tutorials or learning elaborate controls. The absence of demanding mechanics allows the music and visual design to remain the center of attention. Conversely, players accustomed to rhythm games or more elaborate VR titles may find themselves wishing for additional involvement. There is no substantial scoring structure, complex progression, competitive element, or extensive collection of mechanics to encourage mastery.
The project's relatively short nature also needs to be considered within its intended format. Since everything is constructed around a particular musical performance, the experience naturally lasts closer to the length expected from a music-focused presentation than a conventional game. This prevents the concept from becoming unnecessarily stretched, but it severely limits the amount of content. Replay value largely depends on how strongly the player connects with the song and visuals. Someone who loves the track may enjoy returning to the experience, while another person could feel satisfied after seeing everything once.
The surreal artistic direction helps compensate for that brevity. Traveling through extraterrestrial landscapes and artificial structures before encountering dancing machines and abstract geometry gives the experience an eccentric personality. The visuals do not merely illustrate literal lyrics or attempt to construct a straightforward story. They instead communicate mood and energy, using VR as a canvas for imagery that would be difficult to reproduce with the same impact in a traditional music video. Its best moments occur when the audio and visual transitions work together closely enough that the surrounding environment seems to become an extension of the song.
Because the experience is available free of charge, its limited scope is considerably easier to accept. It feels more appropriate to view it as an experimental showcase introducing players to a musical artist through VR rather than a full commercial game expected to provide hours of entertainment. It demonstrates an interesting approach to promoting original music by surrounding it with a custom-built virtual world. For VR enthusiasts interested in unusual applications of the technology, that concept alone makes it worth experiencing at least once.
There are nevertheless clear limitations. Players searching for meaningful challenge, narrative complexity, character development, exploration freedom, or extensive interaction will find very little of those elements. Even fans of music games should temper expectations because this is not primarily about accurately performing actions to a beat. Its identity is much closer to immersive audiovisual art. The enjoyment comes from surrendering to the combination of sound, movement, scale, and surreal imagery rather than proving mechanical skill.
Steam Deck compatibility is essentially unsuitable for standard handheld use. Faking to Dance is a VR-only experience designed around SteamVR and appropriate virtual reality hardware. It does not provide the conventional Steam Deck experience of launching the game directly on the handheld display and playing through its integrated controls. Therefore, Steam Deck owners should not consider it a practical portable title unless they are experimenting with unsupported external configurations. A VR-capable PC and suitable headset remain the intended way to experience it.
Faking to Dance is ultimately a small but creative demonstration of what happens when a music video is designed around virtual reality from the beginning. Its energetic soundtrack, lunar scenery, science-fiction environments, geometric tunnels, dancing robots, and abstract imagery combine into a memorable sensory trip. The lack of substantial gameplay and limited replay value prevent it from functioning as a deep VR game, but those qualities are less damaging when viewed within its artistic intentions. For VR users interested in experimental music presentations, it offers a brief, strange, and visually energetic experience without demanding a major commitment.
