First off, let me just say this game is fantastic!!! Hard as nails, but fantastic! As someone who grew up playing Omega Boost on the PS1 THIS definitely scratches that longing itch. Plus I REALLY love the horror aesthetic and art direction of this game. I WISH the dev would make more of this game already. Or maybe add some bonus content down the road. Playing in a first person-mode/cockpit view would be insane! So glad this game came out, I've missed this alot. On a side note If the dev ever came out with merch t-shirts etc. I'd totally buy em, the cool art under the description of the game is right up my alley! If you love frantic shooters this is for you!!

This is amazing. As an arena shooter it has a lot of variety in enemies and combat options, and even though it's with ships it’s incredibly fast-paced thanks to the dashes and speed, you have to be on alert all the time and learn who to target first. The designs and atmosphere lean toward horror, with all the killing creatures at the bottom of the sea, but it’s really the incredible sound design that makes it unique and even scary.
It is pretty hard and challenging. You’ll find yourself replaying levels and hordes over and over because you die so often, but it almost never feels unfair because the game gives you everything you need to handle it. Especially the bosses the attacks are very satisfying to master.
It's more like an arcade because of its short length, it’s also very demanding when it comes to scoring. Even though you don’t die from a single hit and can heal by killing enemies, if you want a good score you practically have to go for a no-hit run, but it always feels achievable. Highly recommended.

Playtested this game, and it's so fun that I'm hoping it gets a post-release Endless Mode some day. Imagine if Star Fox: Event Horizon, Iron Lung, and Devil Daggers fused together to create the Indie game of the year. It's that good. Short but sweet, like Portal 1, the kind of game that leaves you wanting more.
This is the type of game that really emphasizes challenge. It requires a lot, and I mean a LOT of practice, and maybe the occasional change in strategy. You WILL take hits, you WILL die more than once, but stick with it, and you WILL win eventually.
Depending on what your fingers are used to, you may want to swap the ascend/descend control key bindings.
Good luck unlocking the secret weapon.

Didn't expect to get underwater Devil Daggers, but I'll take it.
I'll update the review once I beat it. I see the complaints, and they're not unwarranted, but it just doesn't do it justice how on-point the game is in terms of mechanics, mood, etc.

I think this game is great, it hits that niche itch I didn't know I had. Don't think it's worth 20 bucks though, but I would love to see this expanded in some way be it extra levels or a endless mode in a future update.
The difficult tag is definitely deserved, it's super easy to get swarmed if you're not paying attention, and the atmosphere fits amazingly for that slow buildup at the start and in-between levels.
Personally I wish there were more games like this with a bit more focus into the story and exploration, I'm probably trying to squeeze blood from a stone or however that saying goes, but point is; I like this game, it's story and it's world and would love to see more.

What a phenomenal game
Sure, it looks like Star Fox as if it were a deep-sea sci-fi horror, but it's so esoteric & mysterious that calling it a Star-Fox-like would be doing a disservice to Death in Abyss. I am a HUGE fan of retraux (or faux-retro) games, and even tho I never played a whole lot of PlayStation 1 games, I adore the jagged & gritty design direction in this game.
I particularly love the art style & audio design. The artwork meshes jagged models & pixelated textures with an old green-colored computer interface. Probably close to something like Metal Gear Solid's art direction. The sound design is deliciously bit-crunched, which usually employs a cacophony of weird alien sounds (fitting for the setting) but it can also sound mysteriously frightening at times.
Death in Abyss is PUNISHINGLY DIFFICULT, which is fitting for a PS1-like game. I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone who doesn't want challenging gameplay. Completing the full campaign is short, but beating each mission is very exhausting since it tests your 3D spatial awareness, movement, and gunplay all at once. If you can't beat a mission the first time, then take a break & try it again another day, that's how I maintained my sanity.
Death in Abyss is so cool, creepy, and engaging all throughout. I just wish I had MORE missions to play on this game, which I think would be a testament to how freakin amazing it is.
If you're squeamish about the price tag, (which is understandable, it seems a little steep for a 6-7 hour game) then wait for a sale.
