Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony
Welcome to a new world of Danganronpa, and prepare yourself for the biggest, most exhilarating episode yet. Set in a “psycho-cool” environment, a new cast of 16 characters find themselves kidnapped and imprisoned in a school. Inside, some will kill, some will die, and some will be punished. Reimagine what you thought high-stakes, fast-paced investigation was as you investigate twisted murder cases and condemn your new friends to death. A New Danganronpa Begins: Forget what you thought you knew about Danganronpa and join a completely new cast of Ultimates for a brand-new beginning. Murder Mysteries: In a world where everyone is trying to survive, nobody’s motivations are quite what they seem. Use your skills to solve each new murder or meet a gruesome end. Lie, Panic, Debate! The world is shaped by our perception of it. Fast-paced trial scenes will require lies, quick wits, and logic to guide your classmates to the right conclusions.

This game's final trial is the ultimate reading comprehension test.
Most players fail it.

You mad genius you. I started hating this game, since it wasn't like Danganronpa 1 and 2. Now, thanks to the final trial, I love this installment just as much as the others, if not more so.
...and now I'm a little sad 2x2 is coming. I guess in the end, the Killing Games never end... :(

"This game feels more like a fanfic than an actual Danganronpa game" is a take I have seen thrown around. Well, that's the point. DRV3 is the ultimate test of media literacy.
DRV3 is a parody of its own franchise, and that's why it's my favorite of the main series. The game is over the top chock full of tropes and cliches. In comparison to past characters, many people feel like the V3 cast is very one-dimensional and overexaggerated. In fanfiction, characters tend to get boiled down to a single personality trait.
(Spoilers for the ending.) One of the Monokuma theatre scenes stood out to me: "When a series lasts for several seasons, eventually it'll run out of material. My memory has been awful lately. I wonder if it's cuz of how long the series has been going." In between the release of Trigger Happy Havoc in 2010 and DRV3 in 2017, they released:
- 5 novels, two of which their own series (Kirigiri 2013-20 and Togami 2015-17)
- 2 comics
- 3 anime
- 3 main series games
- 6 spinoff games
People kept begging for more. "It's time for Danganronpa to end!" was not just the ending of the game, but Kodaka and Spike Chunsoft's way of saying they were done and wanted to move onto other projects. I know this is a fairly unpopular opinion, but I loved Tsumugi as a mastermind. Being the only non-Junko mastermind, she had the gall to actually play her killing game instead of watching from a computer room the whole time. By being as forgettable as possible, she blended in perfectly. While she did bend the rules in Chapter 1, she had no other choice if she wanted to survive and for the killing game to continue. On top of this, she's a crazy fangirl that's willing to kill people to make her dreams come true and show how powerful the influence of fiction really is to reality. Throwback to those 12yo girls who murdered someone for Slenderman. And if I remember correctly, a Nagito fangirl that cut her hand off IRL so she could be more like him. It's a really interesting commentary on fandom culture and obsession. Also: "the writers' barely disguised fetish" with: some of the love hotel scenes, Korekiyo's backstory (he was actually a victim of ...abuse...., but it's glorified. See: TCOALL.), and Monotaro and Monophanie's ... sideplot.
The Monokubs feel forced, but that's also the point! Their purpose is playing on when franchises introduce extra mascots or animal sidekicks (looking at you, Disney) that contribute nothing to the plot, they only exist to boost merch sales. In an interview it was revealed they were added in solely because someone on the art team said Monokuma's seat in the trial room looked empty. They were a last-minute shoehorn after the plot had already been mostly finished.
Overall, I adore this unapologetically self-aware disasterpiece of a game. Someone needs to remind me that this is a Steam Review and not an essay for college.

Decent game. i think the 3 minute sloppy makeout sesh between Kaede and Shuichi could've been extended, but it's an alright game so far.

When I finished the first two parts of Danganronpa, watched the anime, and reached the final installment, I was exited and disappointed. So many people were shouting in reviews and comments that V3 was ruined, the ending was terrible, the game was pointless, blah blah blah.
I started the game with a heavy heart, I couldn’t get into the story, and the Monokubs instantly began to annoy me…
And then I finished the game.
And it turned out to be the best experience of my entire life. It was the best time I’d ever spent in the fiction universe. It was the best game, the best ending, the best meta-irony, and the wildest deconstruction I have ever seen or felt.
Team Danganronpa, thank you for V3, thank you for the love letter to all the fans.
Thank you for the entire experience.

Do not let other people tell you this game sucks. If you are a Danganronpa fan, then play it for yourself to form your own opinion. That's what I did after hating it for so long, and now I think its the best one because of it. The ending is divisive, but please don't let someone else tell you that it's good or bad. It's objectively neither, so play it for yourself and see what you think.

I am disregarding everything about the game itself and giving it a thumbs-up exclusively because Gonta is a character
