Valheim – Guide to Automatic Fishing without a Fishing Rod

If you're an experienced Valheim player, you probably know how useful fish can be in the game. However, in order to obtain it, you'll need to find a trader, buy a fishing rod and bait, and spend some time fishing. In this guide, we'll share a way to automatically catch fish without using a fishing rod.

How to catch fish without a fishing rod

If you're walking along the ocean shore, you may notice that fish occasionally jump out of the water. Some fish even land on the shore and stay there for a while before returning to the water. In this case, the player can simply approach the fish and pick it up. We'll use this mechanic to catch fish.

Tip: It's best to build the trap near your base, as fish will appear much more frequently.

Step №1: Сhoose a place

First, you need to find a place where a lot of fish live. Usually, such places can be found in the Meadows or in the Black Forest. Note that after you start building the trap, some fish may disappear, but don't worry, they'll return later.

Step №2: Start building

To start, build several small structures right in the water. You'll need regular wood as well as iron or solid wood. The structures need to be reinforced with supports made of solid wood or by reinforcing the wooden floor with metal grates. The second method allows you to create a larger trap. Note that the trap can collapse without supports.

Start building your fish trap by choosing a suitable location. To do this, you need to build a wooden floor starting from the shore and reinforcing it with a lattice floor if you have iron or with supports made of solid wood if you don't.

It is important to extend the wooden floor as far as possible, but not to start building too deep under the water, so that the fish cannot easily escape back into the ocean and the wood doesn't rot.

Step №3: Add a roof

Next, you should place a straw or slate roof at a 26 degree angle on both sides of the installed floor, and install wooden partitions on both sides. This will help keep the fish in the trap for as long as possible.

Tip: a slate roof will guarantee that your catch won't escape.

Step №4: Collect the catch

At the end or beginning of the trap, you can install a chest for convenient storage of the caught fish.

Sometimes the fish may run out. If this happens, the trap needs to be dismantled and rebuilt in a different location.
