Annual is a deliberately straightforward first-person shooter that embraces the uncomplicated action of 1990s FPS games. Developed by Blake Pierce and published by Pierced Games, it puts spectacle and survival ahead of elaborate storytelling or complex progression. The result is a small indie shooter built around a familiar but effective idea: give the player a weapon, surround them with hostile creatures, and see whether constant movement and firepower are enough to keep them alive.
The story provides just enough context to support the action. You are the survivor of a space expedition who awakens from stasis to discover that alien threats have turned the situation into a fight for survival. Beginning with only a blaster reinforces the feeling of vulnerability during the opening moments. There is no lengthy introduction filled with characters and exposition. Instead, the game quickly establishes the danger and allows the player to concentrate on escaping the increasingly hostile situation.
Combat is where Annual places most of its attention. The game advertises fast and fluid FPS action alongside a very large number of enemies, making its intentions clear from the beginning. Encounters are less about carefully planning every shot and more about remaining mobile while managing groups of attackers. When several enemies are present, movement becomes almost as important as aiming. Constantly changing position and preventing opponents from surrounding you produces the kind of hectic rhythm associated with older arena-style shooters.
Annual also features a sandbox environment to explore rather than restricting everything to a purely linear shooting gallery. Exploration gives players opportunities to move around at their own pace and helps provide some contrast between the more intense combat sequences. The sandbox concept should still be viewed within the context of a modest indie production. This is not an enormous open world packed with quests, characters, elaborate environmental interactions, and dozens of activities. Instead, the freedom primarily serves the game's FPS mechanics by providing space for exploration and battles.
Its intentionally retro design is both an advantage and a limitation. Players who miss shooters that immediately hand over control and concentrate on killing monsters may appreciate how little Annual complicates its formula. There are no excessive cinematic interruptions or enormous progression systems getting between the player and the action. On the other hand, anyone accustomed to the polish, sophisticated artificial intelligence, detailed weapon handling, narrative depth, and extensive customization of larger modern shooters may find the experience basic. Annual works better when approached as a compact throwback rather than as a competitor to contemporary big-budget FPS releases.
The presentation follows the same modest philosophy. Its visual design is functional rather than spectacular, and the overall production carries the rough edges expected from a small independent project. The abundance of enemies can create entertaining chaos, but repetition can eventually become noticeable because much of the experience depends on fighting rather than constantly introducing new mechanical ideas. Still, there is a certain charm in how directly the game pursues its objective. It wants players moving, shooting, exploring, and surviving without unnecessarily complicating those fundamentals.
The game is single-player and relatively lightweight in terms of hardware requirements, asking for a 64-bit Windows environment, 4 GB of memory, DirectX 11 support, and a little over 2 GB of storage. Partial controller support is available. Mature content primarily comes from frequent violence and gore, which is unsurprising considering that eliminating large groups of hostile creatures is the central activity.
Steam Deck compatibility is currently best regarded as Unknown or Unverified rather than officially Verified or Playable. Annual is a Windows-only title and would therefore depend on Proton when played through SteamOS. Its relatively low system requirements and partial controller support are encouraging characteristics, but they should not be mistaken for an official guarantee of smooth Steam Deck operation. Players interested specifically in portable play should expect that controller configuration or other adjustments could potentially be necessary.
Annual ultimately delivers exactly the kind of experience suggested by its description: a small, free-to-play FPS inspired by the aggressive simplicity of the 1990s. Its greatest strengths are immediate accessibility, rapid combat, an explorable environment, and the satisfaction of dealing with substantial groups of enemies. Its weaknesses come from essentially the same philosophy, as limited complexity and production values prevent the concept from developing into something particularly deep.
For players who enjoy obscure indie shooters, retro FPS design, alien hordes, and games that prioritize immediate action over complicated systems, Annual can provide an entertaining diversion at no monetary cost. Those seeking an expansive campaign or highly polished modern shooter will probably find its ambitions too limited. Taken for what it is, however, it remains a respectable experiment in recreating the simple pleasure of surviving against overwhelming extraterrestrial opposition.

FPS Arcade-like. Huge giant map with pretty visuals. Shoot all the things by constantly switching between ammo.
