Survivalist
It's one year after the collapse of civilization and self-centered hedge fund manager Joe Wheeler emerges from his specially constructed bunker in search of food. This is a huge open-world Role Playing Game where you have the freedom to play how you want – but your choices have consequences. Your aim is to find other survivors, gain their respect, and build a community. You'll scavenge for supplies, trade, plant crops, go on quests, face moral dilemmas, go to war, and uncover dark, terrible secrets! Innovative dialog system with characters that remember your actions and form their opinion of you accordingly. Combines Action-RPG and Real-Time Strategy elements – you can take control of, or issue commands to, any character that joins your community. Fast zombies and challenging combat that requires you to make use of all resources available to survive!

The developer deserves major respect for releasing a patch that supports the Steam Deck and allows playing on Linux. The game itself is a hidden gem, sloppy but nice. There's something almost spiritual about the way it captures survival and human interaction.

Good for its time (I still remember seeing this on the XBLA Indie Game section!) but imo it didn't age well. Controls are frustrating, you often fight with the camera angle, and the story setup doesn't feel right (you get thousands of rounds of ammo and plenty of food, water, and base materials all on day 1). For me the difficulty comes from the bullet sponge zombies and cracked raider AI, or the constant insulin fetch quest that reminds me of the Zombrex you had to repeatedly retrieve over the course of Dead Rising 2.
The main appeal seems to be the base building, and how you can control each of your community members and give them different tasks, in contrast to State of Decay where you yourself had to do most of the work/scavenging. I can see how this could be fun as a sort of XBLA colony-sim meets isometric rpg with survival elements, but it just didn't click for me.
The price is unbeatable however, and if the prior description sounds interesting to you then you should definitely give this game a shot! Just get ready to be in it for the long haul. Thumbs up since at its core this is a solid game that the dev cares for. It just isn't for me.

It's not bad. I feel like there are far better options for but $5 ($2 on sale right now), it's not a bomb of a zombie game, and there are quite a few of those as well.

This is a good post-apocalyptic zombie survival builder game. You'll meet lots of characters with different personalities, and many of them will have backstories to delve into. Most of them will belong to various good, neutral, or evil factions. There's also an overall story to the game,
You are Joe, a fairly wealthy guy, who built a bunker in the desert just in case SHTF during your lifetime. Well, one year ago it did... in the form of a zombie apocalypse. Now your food supplies are running low, so you finally emerge to see what the world is like.
Meet new people, and try to recruit them to follow you. Scavenge for new supplies, and build your own little survivor compound. Choose to either try to get along with the other factions you come across, or try to conquer them. Defend you and your group against bandits and raiders. Barter when you can. And for maximum entertainment, blow up buildings.
I'm not really a fan of the top-down camera, and waiting for your people to complete tasks, like Isham collecting wood planks to build stuff with, can be very tedious. If you take the diabetic Alice into your group, then constantly needing to find her some insulin can also be a grind. It makes for a good challenge, yes, but it's still a grind. The game also feels like a 90's game to me.
Some of the zombies are slow, and some are real speedsters. I don't like the speedsters, as they often come racing into view from nowhere. They cover the distance between them and me so fast that I don't have time to respond, especially if there's more than one of them. Lastly, I find the controls a little clunky. Overall though, this game is definitely worth the 99 cents I paid for it.

this is OK if you are looking for an indie cheap ass game that can soak up a lot of time. i could play it more but I've stopped downloading cheap ass indie games to see how much of my time they can waste.

I tried to get into it several times, and on my final successful attempt finally got to enjoy this game. It's ugly but charming.
