Dungeon Defenders II blends tower defense with action RPG combat, creating a unique mix of strategic planning and real-time battles. The game offers co-op fun, tons of loot, and a colorful fantasy world, but is it as good as the original?
The Good:
✅ Tower Defense Meets Action Combat: Build defenses, then jump into the fight yourself!
✅ Co-Op Mayhem: Playing with friends makes the game much more enjoyable.
✅ Loot & Progression: Tons of gear, hero customization, and satisfying upgrades.
✅ Free-to-Play Done Right: You can enjoy the game without spending money, though grinding is required.
The Bad:
❌ Balancing Issues: Some towers and heroes feel overpowered, while others feel weak.
❌ Repetitive Gameplay Loop: The grind for better gear and materials can become tedious.
❌ Performance Problems: Occasional lag and crashes, especially in later levels.
❌ Doesn’t Quite Match the Original: While fun, it lacks some of the charm and depth of the first Dungeon Defenders.
Final
If you love tower defense games with action-packed combat, Dungeon Defenders II is a great choice—especially for co-op fun. But be ready for grinding, balance issues, and some technical hiccups along the way.
⭐ 7/10 – Fun with friends, but can feel repetitive. ⭐⭐ :)

Dungeon Defenders II is a vibrant mix of tower defense and action RPG that’s perfect for solo or co-op play. The colorful art style and creative hero designs make it fun to explore and strategize. Each hero brings unique abilities, so experimenting with different combinations keeps the gameplay fresh. The mix of building defenses and diving into the action yourself is both engaging and rewarding.
However, the game has its downsides. The progression system can feel grindy, especially if you’re chasing specific upgrades. Microtransactions for cosmetics and other content are noticeable, which might be a turn-off for some players.
Despite these issues, Dungeon Defenders II is a great pick for those who enjoy strategic combat with a dash of teamwork. It’s easy to lose track of time as you fend off waves of enemies and perfect your defenses. If you’re into tower defense games with a bit more action, this one’s worth a shot.

Feels a bit grindier than Dungeon Defenders, but then again that's expected given the free to buy model they went with.
At the end of the day it's still a Dungeon Defenders game, and quite frankly it's the type of hack and slash loot explosion tower defense game that just hits different.
I've been scouring Steam Discovery Queues for years trying to find a tower defense game that really compares to this. Every 18 months or so I continue to fail to find it and just fire up this game or Dungeon Defenders when I need my "fix".
If you happen to know of a game like this, hit me up in the comments because I'm 100% interested.

Good game if you enjoy the grind. $40-60 that's what you'll need to get all the QoL+Season Pass. P.S. Don't buyout bag and vault slots until you've gotten the free ones first.

This game is undoubtedly pay to win and has several annoying issues, mainly because these are very confusing as a new player:
- making a consistent lobby with friends (you can't just join off steam you have to make a party in the esc menu to keep playing)
- there is a public town and a private tavern that have the same things (making parties was more confusing due to this)
- creating game matches and not realizing they are public (you can make private games but it was kind of hidden and wasn't intuitive to find out how to do it)
- friends timing out when trying to join your private matches
- figuring out what to do after you beat the campaign (there are many tabs of maps to do and some of them will completely destroy you)
- figuring out what maps you've already done before, and how strong you have to be to do them (there is hardly any information about the maps when you click on them)
- the map names and zones are confusing. For example, my friend had 1 adventure map left to do and we had to look up how to see what the last map was in an obscure menu. That map that was listed was nowhere in the adventure tab so we had to guess.
- a kind of overwhelming about of shops in the lobby that aren't really explained at all and seem irrelevant for the beginning of the game (was this because I bought the game when it came out ages ago? not sure)
On top of the confusing issues, you can swipe your credit card on just about anything (buying gold, unlocking characters, powering up your gear/weapons, battle pass, bag tabs, etc etc) and playing solo seems a lot harder than playing with a group (at least at the beginning of the game). There have also been a lot of UI bugs (tutorial text staying on the screen forever) and wonky/bugged out numbers on gear that seem to fix themselves if you restart.
Even with all of these problems that have driven me absolutely insane over the last week lol, this game is still a free co-op tower defense game that looks pretty good and has fun levels and characters. You get to play 4 characters at a time and swap between them during the matches which is enjoyable for strategy setup. Once you get to the very easy/low level cap all of your characters level at once which is a relief. It still gets updated and seems to have an active community. The pay to win is there if you want to skip grinding I suppose, but if you want to defend some dungeons with your pals and have something to grind at this is definitely that game. I don't know why I wrote this whole thing but you can go play it now and see if you enjoy it hehe :))))
