In a world tormented by the forces of evil, a swordsman and
his companions set out to defeat Hadlar, the Dark Lord.
On an isolated island in the southern seas, a boy named Dai lives among monsters,
yearning to become a hero himself someday.
Everything changes when the Dark Lord is revived.
With a new crisis facing the world, Dai makes a promise to his mentor,
encounters new friends, and slowly learns about his own inescapable fate…
This is the beginning of Dai’s adventure, and his quest to become a true hero!

If you're expecting an RPG/JRPG like the mainline Dragon Quest games, DO NOT BUY THIS. I truly can understand why fans of the series are upset and what their issues with the game are, but from my personal experience it reminds me of more of playing a beat 'em up than an RPG/JRPG. The entire game is as follows: (long) Cutscenes that are either stills for the anime or (to me) somewhat decent animated cutscenes, then timed/numbered horde mode fight or a boss. Timed/numbered horde fight then cutscene/boss. Rinse and repeat. And for whatever reason I have no complaints with that system for this game.
The combat is basic but I still had fun with it. Its just a short 3 hit combo that changes slightly if you delay the final attack, and 3 spells/abilities that you continue to unlock as you level up. You can swap between characters mid battle and use all of their spells and attacks, too. This adds the slightest layer of depth to the combat. The majority of people will say that the general feel, layout, and presentation of this game is like that of a mobile game, but to me it feels more like an older game with basic combat that relies more on parrying/dodging. And for whatever reason I still have no complaints with that system for this game.
I still haven't beaten it yet, but when I get home from work I'm always ready to complete my chapter for the night. I don't know anything about The Adventure of Dai anime or manga, but it reminded me of playing Budokai 1 for the first time before I ever finished watching the Android/Cell saga. It was just a fun way to experience the story for the first, so far. But, since I don't know much about the story I don't know how much is skipped or simply not in the game, and that makes me want to watch the anime.
Idk. Its fun for me but that might not be your thing. I paid $23 for this game and I think I've at least gotten that much enjoyment/fun out of it. Go in knowing that it'll be a very simplistic and I think you'll like it.
UPDATE: Just beat the game. I would still recommend it on sale only because now I wish the story was finished. I'd pay for a DLC continuation.

Normally I would simply say "tis good" on my review, but that's not really helpful now is it?
I wouldn't recommend this game unless of course you're passionate about adventure of Dai itself, and I wouldn't say it's worth it at full price. The game is quite good if you like 3D fighters, and especially roguelikes or roguelites I'm not really sure what the difference is. The temple of recollection focuses on this roguelite/like mechanic and is honestly one of the most fun parts of the game! It can feel a bit grind-y since the core gameplay is just fighting to get stronger and then fight bosses, but if that's what you're into then I say to give it a go!
The story isn't done very well in terms of how it's shown, but the plot is very good since it just follows the anime's. I'm not a fan of which parts of it they chose to animate vs. do a recreation of in showing frames with a voiceover play-by-play though, however, the ones that they do choose to animate look stunning and I am in love with the models! Seeing the characters in 3D is definitely worth it if you're a fan of the series!! Although, if you're not a fan of the gameplay style then I would recommend just watching the animated cutscenes on Youtube as an alternative.
I think that for the most part the achievement hunting and the hack and slash style gameplay are most of the appeal, as well as getting to play as characters from the series. (Although I am mildly disappointed that you never get to play as Avan :,)) Overall, the game is very fun and can easily suck up a couple hours if you're not careful!!

I can see why people might hate this game, its certainly no masterpiece but i personally enjoy it. The graphics are beautiful, combat and animations are not bad, it is a charming game all around so yeah i would recommend it.

Good game for fans. But it is not a complete story and may need to wait for part 2 later.

I like it as someone who is somewhat getting into rpg games. I plan on beating the game as well and I enjoy trying to figure out what I need to beat the bosses.

A little lacking, but quite decent for the DAI-hards in your life.
