In the first-person puzzle game that would go on to inspire Portal 2, Tag: The Power of Paint puts you behind the barrel of a spray paint gun with very unusual abilities. Depending on which color you use, the player can bounce off, speed over, or stick to the level’s surfaces. Combine paint powers to platform your way to the end of each mind-bending stage.
- Bounce, rush, and climb your way to victory!
- Puzzle your way through nine mind-bending stages!
- Combine paint types for the ultimate parkour experience!
This game was developed as a student project at DigiPen Institute of Technology and was created for educational purposes only. Please check out our publisher page for more information.

i think digipen should give this game workshop support so that people can make their own custom levels cuz this has potential. i don't know if it's been done yet but that would be so awesome.

Ah, this game brings back memories of middle school. One of my classmates had downloaded it onto the school PCs, and we used to play the first few levels when we could get away with it. I played this before Portal 2, and it was a pleasant surprise when I saw gels appear in Portal 2. Neat, fun game.

Fun, short, platformer game that started as a student project and became the inspiration for the Gel mechanics found in Portal 2. Very neat! The soundtrack is very good too.

A fascinating look into Portal 2 gels before they were Portal 2 gels, including the concept that would have been the scrapped fourth gel type. It's kinda hard to separate this game from Portal 2, in the same way it's hard to separate Narbacular Drop from Portal 1. I encountered a few issues in my time with the game (I had to run it in windowed mode, certain actions can break the physics), but once I was in I had a good time, and given the price and the intrigue of its connection to Portal 2, as well as its own enjoyable aesthetic, this is well worth checking out

This is portal 2 before portal 2 was a thing. If they turned it into a full game it would be a 9/10 at least

Yeah I can see why Valve hired Tag Team on the spot. The paint mechanics of Tag are absolutely incredible, with my favorite being the stick paint. Definitely give Tag a try, after all we wouldn't have the gel mechanics in Portal 2 without this game.
My only complaints with it (aside from the lack of controller support) is it's only 30 minutes long, which for showing off the paint mechanics in a free game made by a bunch of university students back in the early 2010s that's all you really need, but I feel like there's so much more that could be done with the paint mechanics. I would love it if the Tag Team (if they're still at Valve idk I haven't looked it up) if they made a new Tag game with new paints, new mechanics, because I feel like there's so much more that could be done with the paints. (Before anyone says it, no Aperture Tag doesn't count. That wasn't made by them and only used the blue and orange gel.)
Anyway yeah, play this game, like it's free and is only half an hour long so it's a no brainer.

This is a fun little game. You can definitely see the inspiration for the gel mechanics in Portal 2. My only real complaints with it are that I navigating with the adhesive paint to be a little confusing. I can potentially see why the chose to cut the Adhesion Gel from Portal 2. And my only other complaint is that I wish there were some resolution options. But I'm willing to overlook that since this was a student project.
