X-COM: UFO Defense
You are in control of X-COM: an organization formed by the world’s governments to fight the ever-increasing alien menace.
Features:
- Command deadly close-combat battles
Shooting down UFOs is just the beginning: you must then lead a squad of heavily-armed soldiers across different terrains as they investigate the UFO crash site. Tackle the aliens with automatic rifles, rocket launchers, and even tanks in the struggle to retrieve useful technology, weapons or life forms.
- Research and manufacture alien technologies
Successful ground assault missions will allow X-COM scientists to analyze alien items. Each new breakthrough brings you a little closer to understanding the technology and culture of the alien races. Once you have sufficient research data on the UFO’s superior weapons and crafts, you’ll be able to manufacture weapons of equal capability.
- Develop a strategy to save the Earth
You must make every crucial decision as you combat the powerful alien forces. But you’ll also need to watch the world political situation: governments may be forced into secret pacts with the aliens and then begin to reduce X-COM funding.

Still the most amazing world-logistics procedurally-generated PLATOON combat game ever.

While the game is old, I do feel like the gameplay is much more entertaining than the modern remakes. This is obviously cause there is no Bradford tell you about the Avatar project every few days. Additionally, you can ignore UFO landings and instead focus more on research objectives. Now you cannot ignore terror missions, but that's par for the course. I still dread the Chryssalids that do show up. I would recommend playing this with OpenXCOM as the UI is kinda cramped?

Classic. I used to love this game back in high school. Something about the combination of saving the world, small tactical fights, and the general scope of the game always appealed to me.
I plan on doing another play through in the near future, maybe try a harder difficulty or something.

This game consumed me in college. It's a better game than any game of the era (in my opinion) and many of them that came after. The depth an complexity wasn't rivaled for decades. Graphics... eh, not so much. But use your imagination. Jet packs and blaster launchers ftw!

Tried it once or twice before, but never really gave it a proper shake. Well, now it clicked, and I can't stop playing.
This is a legit 10/10. The game has fantastic pacing, and the high lethality of the sort of hide-and-seek tactical combat, combined with the excellent atmosphere, makes for a tense and deeply satisfying experience as you go from scrappy alien defense force to efficient alien death squad.
So am I done with the game? Fuck no. I'm going straight back in to try out the mods. Like many have pointed out, OpenXcom is the best way to play this. It's super easy to install, and there are ways to still have Steam track your hours, if you care for that sort of thing.

I love this game. Honestly this game shaped my childhood. Growing up, I could not wait to run home from school and fire up my Tandy PC and play this game. So many hours of my youth were spent with me and my friends playing this. So much fun and so many cherished memories revolve around it.
Oh, and if you thought for one sec I beat it when I was younger, HA!!!!!! this game took YEARS to beat, Thats XCOM baby!!!
