目前美国的运载火箭威力都不够大,难以单靠火箭的推进在几年里把一艘这样的太空飞船送达木星或更远处。但是我们是聪明的(也是幸运的),还有别的办法。我们能够(像“伽利略号”做过的那样)飞到一个天体的近旁,让它的引力把我们推向下一个天体,这叫作引力支援。除了别出心裁,我们几乎没有花费什么。这有点像玩旋转木马,在它转过来时抓住它上面的一根柱子,就会使你加速并转到某个新方向。飞船的加速被行星绕太阳运动的减速抵消掉一部分。但是因为与飞船相比,行星的质量要大得多,因此行星几乎一点也未慢下来。每一艘“旅行者号”太空飞船都依靠木星的引力获得近64000千米/时的速度提升。反过来,木星绕太阳的运动则变慢了。这种影响有多大呢?从现在算起,50亿年之后,当我们的太阳膨胀成一颗红巨星时,木星与20世纪后期“旅行者号”尚未飞越它时的情况相比,将向太阳移近1毫米。
“旅行者2号”利用罕见的“行星连珠”天象飞到木星近旁,受到加速而驶向土星,再由土星到天王星,从天王星到海王星,然后经海王星飞向太阳系外的恒星。
