Disclaimer: I am coming at this review as somebody who is not in this target audience for this game. You know family with kids, let alone daughters.
I am just a casual gamer that had an interest in this partly because of the description and the mini games I saw in the store pages trailer and screenshots.
Also this is my first time reviewing on Steam so forgive me if I am all over the place with this review .
Another disclaimer: I played the game mostly on steam deck and with a controller so your experience might differ to mine.
The game is based on the french comic series of the same name by Christophe Cazenove (writer) and William Maury (artist) that follows the silly and fun escapades and relationship of two sisters Wendy (the oldest) and Maureen (the youngest) ,not sure what their age is, If I remember correctly William based the sisters characters on his own real life daughters.
I actually started reading and collecting the comics in English because of this game so that might give an indication of the quality for the game and my review.
So essentially The Sisters - Party Of The Year is a kid friendly open world collectathon with quests and cosmetics you can buy. You also get a collection of 24 different mini games with some different modes included.
Main adventure mode is focused on the two bickering sisters Wendy and Maureen complaining to their dad about wanting to throw a party at their house they decide to have a contest of 24 challenges and whoever wins the most gets to run the party.
You can play as either Wendy or Maureen and get to explore the sisters home and the town of Millau (based on the real life French city) and surrounding areas with some different modes of transport which can make the back and forth between quests less tedious. You go around the world doing quests and mini games for different characters and friends of the Sisters winning all the mini games with that sister finishing the adventure.
And that's it really for the story. There's some decent English voice acting which is fine but there's not much else with the story. The ending is kind of lazy if I am honest compared to how it opened.
The world of Millau and the areas surrounding it are interesting enough to explore as you do not get many open world games set in European/ French settings so that alone made travelling more fun for me personally. I generally found myself wandering the streets seeing the many different landmarks and areas there were.
Controlling the sisters was fine either walking or with the different transport options like a skateboard or scooter. (Can not do any tricks though)
There is a little jank in their interactions with the environment and with objects can sometimes cause clipping or the camera to go haywire but nothing that seriously broke my game or made them annoying to move around the world for the most part.
This was on the deck so you might have a different experience with PC controls.
The mini games are the biggest highlight in the game and where I think it shines the most.
In the main game it's either Wendy or Maureen who play the challenges .
With the other modes you get to select quite a few characters which are friends or allies of the sisters that do appear in the comic so they are not just random generic kids as I thought they were the first time I played.
Some of these Mini games would not be out of place in the Mario party series (I am sure it was an inspiration for this title).
For the most part as you would expect they are easy to understand and control with simple button pushing and timing though the analog stick ones I have found a little unresponsive or not sure how I am supposed to get it to work as effectively without wasting the time limit faster,
Thankfully most of the mini games work fine and you get easy, normal or hard mode which makes the challenges vary in difficulty bringing replay ability as i still find a few games hard to get a perfect or high score on in hard or normal in some cases.
Here's some favourites of mine to give you a taster of what you can get.
The crazy Chandelier - Hanging on to a bedroom fan for as long as you can without falling off.
Round for everyone - Carrying drinks to the other side of the room without trying to bump or lose drinks to the dancing crowds covering the area or other AIs.
Unicorn toss - You toss toy unicorns at targets while avoiding to hit targets that look like other animals.
Mud pit - You push other opponents into a muddy pit and see how high of a score you can get.
You also can find achievements within the mini games that you could do to get %100. One that involves playing one game with every character in the roster. Sadly this is the one mini game that gives me some analog stick response issues.
You get some modes where you can play all mini games and see how you handle other players online.
But I have not tried any multiplayer so I have no comment on that aspect of the game I am afraid.
Overall most mini games are good, short and easy to control.
The quests and collectables are nothing to ride home about. But you do get tickets that you can then dress up the sisters in new outfits and hairstyles and to some extent their friends as well though its just colour swaps. Some of these are obvious character references and not what I would expect in a family friendly title XD .
As someone who can be a sucker for cosmetics in games I liked this as a reward for the quests.
You do have a little impact in Millau where you get to decorate an area in town with the collectables. you find.
Sound and music
I do not develop games or work with sound but everything seemed fine too me the voice acting and environment ambience were harmless.
The music had some nice tunes practically the slightly funky open world theme and some of the mini game tunes spiced up things and gave the game a bit more of an identity with its sound and music. nothing that will blow you away but certainly not bad at all.
Graphics its a mixed bag.
I was impressed with some of the details and interactions you have within the sisters house and even in the wider open world.this is originally a french game so you see posters that unless you know french you can not read and you do hear the French VAs happiness and groans in the mini games even with English on.
The character models are decent and the outfits and hairstyles you can buy look OK and add some variety with each sister you play as, some I am sure are based on the comic series.
But this is a budget licensed game so animations with npcs in the world or the victory screens for mini games are repeated or non-existent, kind of uncanny with some of the npcs designs as just the mouth moves .
And although I praised the open world it does bother me that the buildings surrounding the main town have no windows or doors behind them or how the roads at the end of the map just look like they are under construction and how all foliage suddenly ends at a certain part in the map's edge.
This all said The Sisters - Party Of The Year even for a budget game has a lot of charm, fun mini games cosmetics, and an interesting European themed open world to explore . If you have kids or young daughters I think it would be a fun experience for them ,also check out the comics they are a fun read :)
However If you're like me and just a gamer that wanted to give a title like this a go from its description and trailer I would recommend it if not just for the mini games as I have wasted a few hours just replaying them.
I know there's a sequel and I look forward to trying and reviewing that next. As I can tell that there was thought put into this licensed game which I was not expecting at all. So in that aspect it went beyond what I thought it could have been. You can get much worse licensed games on the market ,
this probably is one of the best licensed games i have played despite some of its issues.
