Cons:
- Unable to skip cutscenes
- Annoying camera movement
- Weird auto-save mechanism in the story mode

In-Depth Review
Visuals
Just like other LEGO games in general, The LEGO® NINJAGO® Movie Video Game uses LEGO-like visuals for both its environments and characters. The background doesn't look blocky in the cutscenes, although smashable objects will turn into LEGO blocks. Despite using LEGO blocks, the game doesn't look blocky at all. Character expressions are also animated, allowing you to see what happened as it should. However, the expression doesn't look expressive because of LEGO's simplistic facial expression.
Story
As someone who doesn't know what Ninjago is except that it's a block-themed set from LEGO, the game makes me realize that I'm missing out on the background story at the beginning. Luckily, it doesn't take long before you get used to them. To be honest, I don't mind the lack of introduction - it wasn't an issue in understanding the story and characters are introduced in a group of two to make it easier to memorize.
The story is the problematic part. It might look fine at the beginning, but the plot changed itself for the worse starting from the middle half. I assumed that it tries to change it into a lighter tone because it's supposed to be kid-friendly, but it just makes the plot to be irrelevant. I am especially disappointed at the ending since it doesn't conclude anything - it feels rushed, despite it's not.
The Game
Gameplay
The gameplay is simple. There are 8 maps in total that you need to explore to reach the goal. In doing so, you'll be blocked by obstacles - this is where your ability will come to use. The game offers a lot of characters with different types of weapons that can be used to bypass different obstacles. They are usually easy to spot due to their light and markings, although one obstacle where you need to push a block isn't that noticeable due to the lack of the said markings. I even had to do a leap of faith in the last level because I didn't realize that you must push a block to progress.
The game itself is pretty short if you just rush the story mode, but you will take more time if you want to get the collectibles. Each map is quite vast and although there are shortcuts, most characters walk very slowly, forcing you to take your time going back and forth.
Collectibles
Collectibles are abundant. The LEGO® NINJAGO® Movie Video Game feels more like a collectathon game rather than an action game if you ignore the story mode. Once you finished the story, you'll be able to free-roam the area, allowing you to collect the missing collectibles. You can do the collecting on your first visit, of course, although your arsenal will be limited since you are forced to finish the story with a small number of characters, and you will need more than that to get all collectibles. Remember what I said about weapons that can be used to bypass obstacles? Some characters also have certain abilities that can be used for the same thing - you need them for your collectible hunting.
The game offers a tracker to ease your collectible hunt, but it doesn't mean that they are easy to get either. Some collectibles will be placed in places that you won't expect, forcing you to use your wits to figure out how to reach that spot. It won't be hard to solve, especially since you can just bypass some of it with faster characters, although it will still prove to be a challenge to get everything this way.
Combat
Combat is simple. There are different attacks that you can use, which I found to be hard to remember, although I found myself only using around 3 of them. You just need to mash your attack button, alternate it with a jumping attack if they block, or do an ultimate attack where you can unleash a barrage of attacks midair. I can't remember the name of the attacks, but the game keeps on referring to each attack with its name. This gives an issue when I had to upgrade my skill. I can only guess which attack I used the most.
Length and Difficulty
I finished the game in 17.5h. I took my time and reexplored the previous maps several times for the collectibles. The rest of my playtime was spent to 100%ing the game. It shouldn't take that long to 100% the game as long as you rush the story and sweep the leftovers afterward. Some characters can run faster, which can cut a significant amount of time in your exploration. As for the difficulty, the game is easy. You might die several times, but you will always be revived no matter what.
Issues
I found the switching character mechanism to be weird. Sometimes, characters that are on the map won't follow me, forcing me to walk manually twice to the destination that I wanted to before I can use that character to remove an obstacle. They will also follow me sometimes when I decided to leave them in one spot so I don't have to backtrack later. I might know what makes them do such things, but it's such a hassle to change my playstyle to cater to this issue.
I found the camera to be annoying to use, especially since the "move camera to the direction your character is looking to" button is the same as the skill tutorial button. I kept on pressing that button and had to wait for the tutorial to finish since it was unskippable. Speaking of unskippable, cutscenes are also unskippable. The game might say that your progress is saved and save the game, but you still need to watch the cutscene again if you exit the game in the middle of a story mode. It turns out that the game only saves your collectible progress.
Conclusion
Despite the issues, The LEGO® NINJAGO® Movie Video Game is still a solid game. I had a lot of fun collecting and figuring out how to get everything. Moreover, the game doesn't overstay its welcome. The character's slow walking speed might be problematic, although it can be mitigated by switching to another character which is only available late game. If you enjoy collectathon games, you will enjoy this, although kids, especially those who just want to wreak havoc and destroy everything, will like it as well. Most objects in this game can be destroyed and is satisfying to look at.

it's probably one of the best lego games, although i might be a bit biased due to my hyperfixation it's still a really good game.

One of the better LEGO games. Too bad it's based on the movie and not the show which would be a much better plot for a game. It's still a pretty solid standalone title though
