THE CITADEL is a hardcore, brutal old-school shooter full of action that's a throwback to the 90's classics that we all love. Fight through 6 Episodes of 30 action packed levels (and an additional 6 secret levels). Face off against 6 fearsome bosses. Carry 14 different types of weapons, with obliterating secondary fire functions. Make the world tremble with 3 types of single-use special weapons. ・Unlimited Continues. ・You can continue trying until you break. Hub areas serve as respite if you find the episode to be too difficult. ・Completely skill based: no cheap Hitscanner, all projectiles. You live as good as you dodge. ・Huge enemy variety and diversity. From axe throwing cultists, to suicide drones, to mecha tanks, and flamethrower troopers.

A diamond in the rough
Not for everyone, but if you watched the trailer and saw the art style, including the gory "gibs", you probably already know if it isn't for you.
If you hesitate, there is a free demo.
Just play it.
If you still hesitate, well here is what I think of The Citadel :
Its gameplay and level design are very entertaining and manage to be distinct and memorable despite their apparent simplicity. There are very few environmental assets and yet levels feel very varied in both ambiance and gameplay. There are some odd level design decisions (teleport pits), but you get use to them.
The game manages to feel both fast and tactical. Fast thanks to a quick move speed and low TTK. Tactical thanks to its lean mechanic, projectile gravity (the sniper scope has marks for adjusting aim based on distance), low HP and stamina/hunger management. There is also a weapon health/jamming mechanic as an option, although I haven't tried it yet.
The weapons are fun and feel varied. Don't sleep on their alt fire. Even the starting pistol is a magnum that double as a grenade launcher if needed.
Although polarising, the art style is very well executed, outside of performance during gory explosions. The game don't seem to use your hardware fully for some reason so even a good PC can see its FPS tank with a lot of gibs. There's an option to reduce the amount on screen if your machine struggles.
Overall, it took me about 9h to 100% The Citadel in medium difficulty and if it weren't for its sequel, Beyond Citadel (which also has a demo btw), I would have started a difficult run with jamming immediately.
Now that I finished both, I might do this 2nd run soon.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, I had 2 crashes in my whole run. Thankfully they happened during level loading so I didn't lose any progress (levels are relatively short anyway). I had to restart the game twice to pass the next level transition but after that it was fine. Migh be because I tried to bring a temporary minigun from one level to the next...
