TerraTech is an open-world, sandbox adventure game, where you design and build your own creations through a mix of crafting, combat and discovery. Design vehicles from a huge library of blocks. Scavenge, craft and buy new parts to survive and become the ultimate planetary prospector.

I love this game. By far the best goofy robot/vehicle builder I've come across. It does have some significant flaws, but the core gameplay is easily good enough to make it worth the money.
Pros:
- Very wide variety of weapon, locomotion, processing and utility blocks
- Blocks are divided into distinct 'corporations' each of which has its own style and strengths
- Accessible and simple mechanics and style that evolve naturally into more complex gameplay (certain areas are hurt by this simplicity, see cons)
- The corporation and money systems make for quite a satisfying form of progression in the campaign
- There are moments that the building system provides that you just don't get from other games. Building a massive crawling resource processor, and then challenging yourself to make it a FLYING massive resource processor and succeeding is fucking brilliant
Cons:
- It sometimes feels like the devs sacrificed too much in their pursuit of a simplistic style. This is most apparent in the controls - for some reason they quite significantly limit the customisation you can do in this area. Only a very limited number of keybindings are allowed
- The camera control is awkward. Trying to fly and target an enemy tech at the same time is unnecessarily finicky
- It feels like there is a lot of wasted potential when it comes to the campaign. There's no real exploration value to the world, so reaching a point where you can fly or are super-powerful is an anticlimax
All in all, this is a diamond of a game that could do with a lot of cutting and polishing. My only big worry is that it feels like this is happening at a snail's pace, though this might just be because I'm impatient for more!

This is an annoying little game that has performance issues, a convoluted crafting/industry system, really stupid AI and some really odd control design choices. Some of these issues have been fixed over the years I've been playing it, obviously, but a lot remain. Though I guess I "solved" the performance issues by getting a new PC, they've never been bad enough that it has been a real hindrance. Just don't build enough lights to keep a huge factory complex lit at night, and you should be good.
So, why recommend it when it has issues?
I love it. I keep returning to it, and building ever more complicated factories, killing random invaders and doing the missions. More and more stuff gets added in terms of blocks and missions, so while I might get fed up with it after 50 hours, I keep returning.
The only "real" problem left is that once you build a massive fortress of a Tech, you become largely invincible, and that sort of sucks the fun out of it. That's when I walk away for a while, and start over when I inevitably come back.

Endless fun with endless possibilities online & offline. 286 hours with my 8 years old son and we're still exploring new vehicle designs together. I can think of only two things I'd love to see fixed about this game:
- Frame rate drop when you have a big scale construction or vehicle going on. Brings our gaming gigs to their knees.
- Not being able to build mining units, factories, any type of production or trade systems in co-op.
I think one of the strongest assets of this game is building your own mining & production chains & factories, that has a lot of fun & learning value in it, especially for younger gamers like my son. It's a bummer not having them in co-op.
Let's hope Payload adds single / campaign assets to co-op in near future.
