Unlike the other Steven Universe games which use a pseudo-turn based system with timers for your and enemy actions, Unleash the Light is entirely turn based and you have all the time you need to plan your next move. Even more to the point lots more matters in combat such as your team formation, synergy between gems, and the extra powers costumes open up you can choose between. Additionally Rose's Room offers up a rouge-like mode that contains enough content to act as an entirely standalone game on it's own. If you like Steven Universe but didn't like the quick thinking pressure of the old games this one is perfect. If you like unusual but still very thoughtful turn based combat games this is an excellent example. If you like both it's gravy on a perfect pork-chop.

This game is okay...
⭐⭐⭐⭐
a bit of a downgrade from the 2nd game if you ask me...
back to just 'moving between rooms' system just like the first game on mobile phones
but it defo has the best graphics and much more features and abilities to choose from, compared to the first and 2nd game
overall, it's a pretty good game :D

Fun game for steven universe fans - some fun ideas mixed with a little jankiness here and there
Get it while it's on sale if you can (though it only went on sale once in 3 years)
First thing's first - this game is a port of a game for iPad - make of that what you will (yes you can play entirely with a mouse)
Overworld gameplay feels similar to a retro dungeon crawler RPG if it were for a tablet and plays well if a little repetitive/lacking variety - the most you get to do in overworld is mainly break pots or solve a light beam bending puzzle.
Battles are a very Paper Mario style Quick-Time minigames style of combat that can be quite fun.
Characters all have their own unique little gimmicks of how they play, the balance is a little random between characters as a result.
Main story is a little short in my opinion but fun enough, doesn't add much to the SU world .
The game forces you to do 12 randomised worlds as thing to get the full 100% on the story after the conclusion to the main story.
The Rose's Room roguelike mode is fun but VERY harsh on early runs with each character, you will often have no possible chance of surviving some fights even with perfect blocking and will encounter stronger enemies than the main story within like 2 floors. Your characters slowly get bonuses after each failed run to make the combat easier, though i feel like it could've been handled differently so they don't feel like slaughter fests on a first try

This game is ass and the story is mid and took like 0 time to beat (in comparison to other modern era games imo) but i still had fun (tho it was all nostalgia of playing Save the Light when i was younger ig)

The moment I saw I could play Lapis I was SOLD. o5
I all honesty the story line is fine, nothing too great but if you love steven universe then you'll like it. It has you explore different planets and each planet has different levels (you go across the planets and levels by warp pad). The fighting is similar to the old game. Same thing with its general mechanics and character designs. There's an alternative mode you can play rather than story mode, its called Roses room. Basically each character starts off from zero and you have to explore and kill monsters to slowly level up the characters. For your very first run it'll prop be impossible to beat, but each time you fail the character gets stronger.

after playing nearly 60 hours of this game and getting 100% achievement completion I am very conflicted on what to rate this
starting with the pros, the game has a very charmingly simplistic art style, I personally believe it's the best of the 3 games in terms of how refined and smooth it looks. it's very clear this was a passion project, as someone who watched SU for pretty much its entire time on air it was nice to see all the little nods and references to things in the show via accessories/items. pretty much not a single stone was left unturned when it came to the thought process that this is a steven universe RPG. even aspects like the dialogue being so true to the characters and the inclusion of voice acting from the original VA's during key scenes just really gives the game personality
I'm a big fan of the rose's room and black hole challenge runs. I believe it was genius to add a dungeon crawler-esque experience into this game, it adds to the replay value quite a lot (especially considering there's achievements tied to both game modes, so if you want 100% achievements you'll have to grind both considerably anyways). the only issue I encountered with rose's room was some visual glitches and the fact that fusions wouldn't split when defeated, but overall these are just minor nitpicks and don't sway me to view this game negatively
speaking of negatives, there are definitely a few. as I mentioned I got all achievements for this game, and mostly it was the usual grinding you'd expect from undertaking a process like this, but one main, glaring issue with the process was the palace of light. without a shadow of a doubt the worst location in this game and ate up far more of my time than I'd like to admit. the frequency of ambushes and battles in general in the palace is absolutely absurd and makes navigating it for any reason a needless headache. I understand this is the endgame location and the idea behind the high encounter rate was likely for grinding purposes (or just general difficulty), but with the inclusion of the black hole mode it makes the palace feel redundant. there is no reason I should be getting an encounter every other room, AND when backtracking. I have a maxed out party with the best gear and I still find this irritating
I also find it odd how we can have all of the crystal gems in this game, even greg/hessonite, yet we can't have all the fusions. alexandrite hasn't been seen since the first game, and almost none of the fusions available in the second game are available in the third. I understand at some point it's likely too confusing to add each and every fusion, and I'm glad rainbow quartz 2.0/sunstone/obsidian got some love, but why can smoky quartz be featured in both the second AND third games but stevonnie is only in the second? it makes no sense, especially considering steven HAS to be in the party at all times in story mode. why not at least include all his fusions then for variety's sake?
overall I guess my cons are nitpicks in the grand scheme, and from a casual viewpoint this game is likely close to perfect, but for someone like me seeking to 100% the game it does get quite needlessly arduous here and there. ignoring those nitpicks this is a great game, reasonably priced, with plenty of content. if you enjoyed the show you'll enjoy this :)
