Captivating at first sight, but gradually monotonous and homogeneous
8/10
Opening
The Alps are one of nature's most amazing creations. Its snow-capped peaks, clad in white, fascinate countless tourists. Its highest peak, Mont Blanc, has long been a popular place for winter outdoor sports such as hiking, mountaineering, and skiing. Unfortunately, due to its geographical location, visitor flow rate, and danger, not everyone has the opportunity and courage to experience its wonders in person. Steep is a game centered on the Alps, and includes famous skiing locations such as Alaska, Japan, and South Korea. It allows players to enjoy the snow-capped mountain scenery and extreme snow sports without any risk. Whether you are engaging in various extreme sports and stunt performances, indulging in the pleasure of death and limits, releasing adrenaline madly; or strolling in this quiet and beautiful winter world, feeling the sunrise and sunset of the snow-capped mountains and the vast natural scenery of white snow, everything is up to the players to choose.
Strength
The game uses an open world as its core gameplay. Players can explore many peaks around the Alps, and they can switch to locations such as Alaska, Japan, and South Korea. Steep focus on advancing through a wide variety of challenges, including performing dazzling stunts and winning applause by demonstrating exquisite operating skills; surpassing yourself in the checkpoint race for precision and speed; experiencing the thrill of brushing against death in a highly dangerous wingsuit flight; enjoying the beautiful natural scenery during a slow and romantic paragliding flight; flying at top speed in a rocket wingsuit flight that is extremely out of touch with reality and maximizes speed and excitement; letting yourself go in the fast and powerful downhill... In addition, players can also experience mountain stories and feel the charm of snow sports and its stories of the Alps according to preset routes.
Steep adopts a large-scale multiplayer online design, and the level is progressive from shallow to deep, easy to difficult. The game's dynamic and outstanding pop music selection, humane and easy-to-grasp operation, and simple yet intuitive interface all bring an excellent gaming experience. Compared to similar games, Steep is not really hardcore or realistic in terms of gameplay. The stunts in the game are not only easy to play, but the penalties for player mistakes are relatively low. Players can even pass levels by coasting after falling down, which is an extremely funny design.
Weakness
Unlike racing games, which can constantly bring players new gaming and visual experiences through different car models and maps, the gameplay of Steep itself is relatively monotonous and homogeneous. The sports equipment available for selection in the game only differs in appearance, with no actual difference in performance. As players spend more time in the game and are immersed in this snowy world for a long time, the initial shock and delight will soon fade away, and aesthetic fatigue is inevitable. In addition to the unreasonable design of the medal standards for some of the game's medium and high difficulty levels, there is also a huge gap in the difficulty of different challenges in the game itself: the stunt performances are obviously easy, while the racing is a bit too difficult. The game itself has very few guiding elements, too. Apart from appearance, level, and challenge results, it also provides very limited positive feedback to players.
Mountain View, which is used to switch the game map of the challenge project, the logic, and perspective dragging are extremely weird, the actual experience is totally awful. Steep also has problems such as the inability to pause ongoing challenges, mandatory internet access to play game content, Ubisoft's terrible online servers, and all kinds of weird game bugs, all of which together greatly ruin the player's gaming experience. Road to the Olympics, a DLC that greatly expands the game's content and gameplay, cannot be purchased directly due to copyright issues and can only be activated again through CDkey.
Conclusion
Although the entry threshold of Steep is very low, it is essentially a game that selects players very much. Due to the highly monotonous and homogeneous gameplay, not everyone can tolerate this kind of environment, and there are only a few players who can truly experience and fully play most of the content in the game.
Even so, Steep can still be regarded as one of the best skiing games on the market today. If you dream of strolling in a virtual Alps snow world and are interested in winter and snow outdoor extreme sports, Steep is definitely worth a try. This work can indeed bring you a good time, even if it may not last long, comes and goes quickly, and it's quite enough for a game originally released in 2016. Of course, if you can accept this kind of game mode and are willing to explore it, then you and Steep are a match made in heaven. The extremely rich challenges will surely bring you endless fun.
At the end of the review, I would like to pay tribute to the following two people: the first is Matilda Rapapor, who was an outstanding freestyle skier, unfortunately, died in an accident while filming a promotional video for Steep in 2016; the second is supercat, a player from China, who experienced the beautiful scenery of the Alps and feeling of freedom through Steep while suffering from illness, but unfortunately passed away later.

Great game but having to sign into Steam and a completely different Ubisoft account that sends 67 thousand admin security prompts means it will forever be buried at the bottom of the list of games I don't play.
I cannot understate how frustrating it is to have to sign into the ubisoft account it is so annoying.

Always loved to play this game, I love Riders Republic too, but something about Steep makes me feel nostalgic, which I can't even explain.. really enjoyed the challenges and the slopes, though the servers are dead now, but this always makes me go back to my old days when i used to come back from school and played it for hours :),
Stop making crap games and bring back these kind of masterpieces,
NO ONE IS GONNA LOVE "ASSASSIN'S CREED : SHADOWS" lol
