Steel Crew
Welcome to Steel Crew!
Steel Crew is a game that is all about Tank vs Tank combat where you can join the crew of a tank together with up to two of your friends. Team up and join in on the 4 on 4 Tank battle!
Built for VR
Steel Crew is built from the ground up with VR as its focus. It does still support other inputs than motion controllers. Gamepad and mouse and keyboard are supported in both VR and on traditional screens.
Detailed interiors
All tanks come with fully detailed interiors in an attempt to reproduce them as accurately as possible.
Driver
The driver obviously drives the tank. All tanks have a manual gearbox so there will be a lot of gear shifting. The driver has a very limited view and often depends on the commander to tell them what to do. When driving with the hatch open the driver will have a much better view and can help spot other tanks but will be vulnerable to incoming machine gun fire. The driver is also the one who can see the current “health” of the tank.
Gunner
The gunner has two guns at their disposal. The main gun and a coaxial machine gun. The gunner’s view is very limited and without help from the commander and driver they will have a hard time finding a target. However the gunner has a periscope and a scope with magnification. To aim the gun (using motion controllers) there are three controls. One crank to aim up/down, another one for side to side and there is also a lever to use the powered traverse for faster but less precise aiming.
Commander
The commander has no direct input on the tank itself but has a great view of the surroundings. The commander has a few tools to help them. They are the only player in the tank with a map that shows the position as well as the position of other friendly tanks. It also shows the capture points on the map and their current status. To help the commander spot enemy tanks they are equipped with a monocular that can be used when riding with the hatch open. Just like the driver, the commander is vulnerable to machine gun fire with their head outside the tank. The commander can also call in airstrikes and talk to other commanders in the team to synchronize their attacks.

So, you've found this game and you think it looks cool, but you're worried that it might be unplayable because of the other reviews, right? There's more to the story, and I want to address these concerns before leaving my honest opinion of the game. I ask you read this all the way through ^>^
*Concerns:
-Is the game abandoned?
No, it's not abandoned, updates are just slow unfortunately. The developer is a singular guy who is both working and doing school. In his free time, he continues to make the game. There's a lot of complaints that the game won't be updated , but updates do come every few months. We just got a map editor and infantry NPC's last update.
-The game is dead, there's nobody to play with!
On the Discord server linked in the game, there are weekend events that people will show up for. Because setting up VR is a hassle for a lot of people and you need at least 2 people per tank, it can be difficult for people to just hop on and hop off like War Thunder. The most important thing is to say in the server that you and/or your friends will be showing up for the event, as it makes other people who were considering playing but unsure of player count also willing to play. If the event isn't in your timezone, there is a second event that will catch the other most common timezone for people to play in. If you want to practice outside of events, there are AI tanks that can be selected from the "host game" menu.
-There's only 2 tanks!
Currently there are only 2 tanks that have similar stats, the Sherman Firefly and the T-34-85. Much in the same way you play Squad for the infantry combat and not the weapons like CoD, this game is about the immersion of being a tank crew. More tanks are planned to be added, and the community has a lot of discussion of which ones would be best to see next.
*Review:
Considering the concerns of the game, the game is still phenomenal fun with some buddies! The asking price ($18 USD) isn't a lot and you can easily get your money's worth for the experience. The gameplay is solid: You and your crewmates have to communicate and work as a team to do even simple things effectively. The more you play with your crew and the more experienced you become, the more complex and effectively you can plan, move and engage. Real tank tactics work in this game, which is super cool. Or you can just goof around and try to bug out your tank by ramming into things at weird angles, that's fun too xD
As far as content goes, there's not as much as I would like, but knowing that there is more in the future is nice. The few maps are fairly varied, which helps. The only game mode is capture points. The map editor helps with keeping the experience interesting.

Really good game just more people need to play it but it still works fine without the concept is great and if you have friends to drive a tank its really good just maybe add more function for non vr that will probably make the game more populated and people dont need friends that buy a 300$ vr headset

I genuinely do like this game, don't get me wrong.
Similar to a lot of people who've played this, I only have one issue, which is the lack of players in this game.
With the right amount of activity, this game has so much potential as a simulator.
I'd say some community organisation would be extremely beneficial, like a Steam or Discord group dedicated to this game, aiming to host weekly tank battles for eager players.
The game is spot on, it just needs more players is all.

Currently the game really needs an active player base to keep it afloat to compensate the already busy solo dev, who does this on his free time. Other than that, it is in a surprisingly good state and fun to play.
If you are willing to play this game once a week, join the discord server for the weekly "skirmishes" to try it out.

This game is super fun and has so much potential, but just like all the other reviews and i hate to say it, its a dead game. I had a hard time finding a sever but it was fun when i found one. This game is fun but just doesn't have the players.

great game more players need to now about this hidden vr gem and would recommend the models of the tanks are good and the voice chat works very well executed. AI is the only down side of this game with it being to good or to easy no in between.
