Verdict: An excellent turn-based steampunk RPG. Recommended with no issue
+ Positives +
+ Steam trading cards (5 drop, 9 to make a badge)
+ Steam achievements (47, requires The Outside DLC and playing on the hardest difficuilty)
+ Solid thematic soundtrack
+ Still looks great thanks to the drawing style
+ Responsive controls
+ Ricochet mechanics are quite fun to play with
+ A lot of weapons and items
+ 10 characters to play with, each with some unique gimmicks
+ Easy to get into
- Negatives -
- The story is all over the place and there are just flashes of it
- RNG layout can screw the hell out of you, especially on challenge missions
- Farming rare hats for achievements is a pain
- Character progression is slow and often doesn't feel rewarding enough (level-ups are often +1 hp or +1 speed)
- No narration outside of 5 cutscenes
+/- Notes
+/- Copy paste of saves really helps with getting the Gold rating achievements
+/- Same menu quits as that restarts the turn

This game is a really fun turn-based tactical shooter. However, it falls apart at the higher difficulties due to the alarm mechanic which forces a slower turn based gameplay into a rush as more enemies pile in which can quickly overwhelm you. This is even worse towards the end of the game as you get enemies which can teleport and shoot on the same turn with two or three enemies spawning each turn. This game definitely rewards quicker strategy over slow turn based turtling combat like XCOM. The 100% for this is also really difficult with the whole game being required to be completed on the highest difficulty with no mission failures, all missions fully completed, and in 800 turns or less across the whole game.

this is my second time playing the game, the first time was on my 3DS.
the game is just as incredibly fun as I remember it being, and it remains one of my favorite games in its genre to this day.
Also music by steam powered giraffe is FANTASTIC.

I bought this on sale, thinking it was just some goofy game I can play to kill time UNTIL I played it and it was awesome. I got invested in the game's story, it's really nice.

I wasn't sure if i would like this, as i had previously played ''Sea of stars'' and decided these types of games were not my cup of tea, however after around an hour i began to enjoy myself and I'm already looking forward to SteamWorld Heist 2.
You have multiple characters to play with (you unlock them as you progress) and each one can be levelled up to gain new perks and abilities. There's various different weapon types which add's lots of variety and team build combo's.
The music is very charming and compliments the ''chill vibe'' of the game.

Get it on sale. I full-starred everything on 'experienced' and I got 15h of gameplay out of it.
It's a simple game, easy to pickup, with some challenge and interesting gameplay. It's pretty basic, with fixed skill progression for each character, 3 weapon categories, and 4 equipment slots per character. Still, it works, and is very much in keeping with the other steamworld games offering, basic gameplay with naive game design but still a streamlined and pleasant experience. Just look at the screenshots and you will understand 75% of what there is to know about the game.
Still, I have a 100% crash to desktop every time I fail a mission (wiped). With a 100% repro, this should have been caught and fixed. Almost pushed me into giving it a thumbs down, but at least no progress is loss, so it's just a matter of starting the game back up.
So don't overpay for it, don't expect too much, and you should have a fine time with it.

A good game about space cowboys. The developers invested quite an effort to build a fictional world that combines SciFi aesthetics and cowboy spirit. You can also practice and experiment without consequences by adjusting difficulties for every stage. If you want to test what new recruits in your crew can do, just set the difficulty to the lowest and let them roll. If you want solid challenges to test your skills, set the difficulty level at the highest and see if you can survive. You have full control over each stage.
Aside from that, it's pretty simple game. The plot is very typical of cowboy stories, protecting innocent citizens' properties by delivering justices to bandits, committing some treasonous acts out of arbitrary sense of justice, and cleaning up the mess that you brought upon the world through careless misjudgment: A typical chaotic good outlaws venturing through the space.
It's so typical that the game would be actually quite valuable for people not familiar with cowboy stories for their education in the US culture, since you won't see many contents about cowboys these days if you are not from the USA, unless you intentionally dig into piles of classic American movies in search for cultural enlightenment. With the gameplay this solid, this game might as well be the most intuitive and accessible content to cowboy aesthetics for non-American people.
Highly recommend this for gameplay and cultural exposure.
