I somehow missed this in the arcades back in the 90's, but it has everything I like in this style of game:
90's arcade graphics, mindless shooting, 2 players and limitless continues. I would've loved playing this even more back then with my brother, but I'm happy to find it now!

Great selection of levels and characters. The bosses are repeat and the challenge is not very high however the style and gameplay make up for it. The soundtrack slaps as well

Classic game. Lots of fun. If you're a fan of Contra, or Metal Slug, you'll enjoy this. Grab this game, and its sequel when they are on sale. They are great pickups for the price.

An all-time favorite of mine. I used to play this a lot as a kid, and it feels good to have it again as an adult. It's an alright port.

Pretty cool game...
It's so self-explanatory that if you just look at a screenshot on the page here, you'll probably get the gist. It's like Metal Slug in that you just run through a linear map getting attacked by random enemies and you blow them all the hell up. Five stages, one life, each stage gets increasingly harder until you get to the last one which, by the standards set by these kinds of games... wasn't... too bad, really.
There's a couple different characters and they have different default weapons and bombs, which is kinda neat, sets it apart slightly from Metal Slug in that way. The top-down perspective and the emphasis on dodge-rolling is odd too, but it's fun, and it also means I think they feel a bit more confident in throwing tons of bullets at you since you have a method in this game of completely avoiding them.
Enemies in this game feel pretty threatening, some later enemies especially can do a LOT and can be pretty agile and just throw bullets all over the screen, they can even melee too, and I think some enemies if you... I don't know, let them live too long? Get too close? Will just go melee mode on you and it's pretty dangerous.
There's a little bit less 'character' to this game, if that makes any sense, relative to the Metal Slug games. Those games have tons of background extras and just all sorts of weird, fun, or cute animations that don't necessarily have anything to do with the action. Shock Troopers just pretty much has the game and nothing is rendered on screen that isn't part of the background, or part of the game itself. Hardly a problem really, since unlike Metal Slug this game consistently sat at 60fps the whole way through, and I know Metal Slug is at times a very slow, laggy game.
I'm about 99% sure this is the same guys who released those PC ports to Steam, too, so I expect this is the way the game was intended to be presented on arcade cabinets 30 years ago or whatever...
Speaking of cabinets, I bet this game would be a lot more fun when not played with the keyboard. I did okay as it was, but maybe try hooking up a controller instead because this game has a full eight directions you can fire in, and getting that out of the arrow keys sucks pretty bad. It'd be no sweat on a thumbstick or d-pad though.
Solid port though overall, and a solid game.
