While the graphics have received a much-needed HD polish, the core gameplay remains as bombastic and satisfying as ever.
This game is all about mowing down hordes of enemies, each more ridiculous and grotesque than the last. From the iconic 'Mental' with his oversized head and manic laughter to the ever-present 'Klek' with its sharp claws, every enemy is a unique and memorable challenge. And let's not forget the legendary 'Sirian Werebull,' a fearsome beast that can throw you across the map with its powerful charge.
Where The Second Encounter truly shines is in co-op. Whether you're teaming up with friends or strangers, the game becomes an infectiously fun experience. The definitive Serious Sam experience. Just about everything in this game is perfect. If I had complaints, it would be directed at specific sections where the game takes control away from you, such as in a room where you're being pulled towards the nearest wall 24/7, and a tall room where you and every enemy constantly bounces on water. Yes, water. Beyond those sections, this game completely eclipses The First Encounter in every way, whether it be more weapons, enemy types, or generally better arenas and environments. I enjoy the first half of The First Encounter, but with that being said, the first half of this game is far better, and it stays good. Second half of The First Encounter is average to frustrating, on top of the environments not changing much aesthetically. This game ranges from Aztec, to creepy horror town, to christmasy snowy village. I love the environmental variety here. The first game is just ancient Egypt, which is a nice setting, but it's just that setting. Much better here.

Serious Sam has always had fun arenas to mow down hordes of unique enemies, though some of the areas do overstay their welcome I cant deny the arsenal of weapons were always a blast to use.

So far, I only played this in the Serious Sam Fusion version of the game, which you get for free if you buy this. I had some fun with it, I like the setting of this one over the one in SS The First Encounter and 3. My only criticism is that the effect of making your screen dark when you get hit by things too extreme. Its annoying and leads to you not being able to see as well as f.e. in The First Encounter. Maybe its down to TSE having darker levels and the effect being the same, but the combo of the dark effect and dark levels leads to blindness at times.
Other than that you have a fine arcade FPS that doesnt care about story and you just play in decent looking (it really aged well imo) levels to kill some aliens. Not smart, but fun. In that sense a bit like Duke Nukem.
Im on a quest of at least trying every game in my library, of which I got plenty from all kinds of bundles, not all though. If you are interested in my journey, check out my other reviews :)

Gameplay wise it's bigger and better than the First Encounter. A couple new weapons, more locaitons, more enemies, more of everything.
Story wise (for weirdos like me who care about that) it's pretty bad. It's a non-canon comedy filler art that starts because of some inside joke by the developers and ends by returning to the same state of events as before, right after putting all continuety in the trash.
But it takes a very special person to care about the Serious Sam story, and gameplay is still just better than the First Encounter.
