United States, 1830: ‘The New World’ is in its ascendancy. Industry is booming, and the race is on to establish the most dominant and powerful rail empire in all of North America. It’s time to outthink and outmaneuver your competitors as you lead your company into the 20th century! In Railway Empire, you will create an elaborate and wide-ranging rail network, purchase over 40 different trains modelled in extraordinary detail, and buy or build railway stations, maintenance buildings, factories and tourist attractions to keep your travel network ahead of the competition. You’ll also need to hire and manage your workforce if you want to ensure an efficient train service, whilst also develop over 300 technologies ranging from mechanical improvements to the trains themselves to workplace infrastructures and advanced amenities as you progress through five eras of technological innovations.

Railway Empire is a game I recommend, but mainly for a specific type of player. If you love trains, management games, and optimizing systems, this game can easily become addictive. But if you’re looking for fast action or something casual, it might feel slow and overwhelming.
The biggest strength of Railway Empire is how satisfying it feels to build your own network and watch it grow. Starting with a few small lines and slowly turning them into a massive transportation empire is extremely rewarding. It gives you that “one more route” feeling, where you constantly want to expand, improve efficiency, and dominate the market.
The economy system is also deeper than it looks at first. It’s not only about placing tracks: you need to think about supply and demand, production chains, and connecting the right cities with the right resources. When everything starts working perfectly and your trains are running nonstop making profit, the game feels amazing.
Another great part is the atmosphere. The map design, the locomotives, and the time periods give the game a lot of charm. Seeing your trains crossing landscapes, tunnels, bridges, and cities really makes the game feel alive. It’s also one of those games where you can play in a relaxed way just enjoying the simulation… or you can go full competitive and try to crush the AI.
That being said, the game has flaws. Sometimes the AI can feel annoying or unfair, the micromanagement can become heavy later in the game, and some mechanics aren’t always well explained. The game can also feel repetitive after many hours because most missions follow the same structure: expand, optimize, connect, repeat. And if you make a mistake early, it can slow down your entire run.
But overall, Railway Empire is a great strategy/management game. It’s not perfect, but if you enjoy the idea of building an efficient railroad network, managing trade, and watching your empire expand across the map, it’s absolutely worth playing.
