Pyre is a party-based RPG from the creators of Bastion and Transistor. Lead your band of exiles to freedom through a series of mystical competitions in the Campaign, or challenge a friend to a fast-paced ritual showdown in the head-to-head Versus Mode. As you traverse the desolate and beautiful Downside, you'll battle against a colorful cast of adversaries in pitched, high-stakes confrontations. Each victory (or defeat!) brings your exiles closer to enlightenment: Whether you prevail or you fail, your journey continues in a branching story with no ‘Game Over’. From the vibrant hand-painted artwork to the evocative musical score, every aspect of Pyre's presentation draws you into its fantasy world.

A successful combination of sports game and visual novel with some RPG elements. The story works well and the visual novel parts don't overstay their welcome, because the next rite is just around the corner.
The soundtrack is, like all of Darren Korb's work, outstanding and and ensures that the final matches are truly spectacular.
The true strength of the game's story is the principle that there is no game over. Win or lose, you continue with your journey and live with the consequences. This makes the game more stressful than if it had a game over screen, because you live with your wins and your losses. You can restart rites (and even the Ironman mode is easy to cheese), but I would encourage you not to. Instead tune the difficulty so that every (or at least most) rites are a genuine challenge, so there's always the possibility of losing. This system is a stellar example of gameplay-story integration and genuinely elevates the experience with this game. Do not be afraid however: There is a practice mode you unlock fairly early on, so you don't have to worry about losing because of lacking practice. You could also practice in Versus Mode, but that risks spoilers.
Lastly it bears mentioning that the gameplay has genuine depth and can be very competitive in Multiplayer with a high skill ceiling. This leads to gameplay quite unlike any current competitve game out there at the moment. Highly recommend looking into that after finishing the story.
