Police Simulator: Patrol Duty

SHORT REVIEW: This is the most complete and action-packed police simulator around. It is less procedural and much more complete, fun, and replayable than Police Simulator: Patrol Officers. It has a vast open world and you can access many buildings too. Unlike Police Simulator Patrol Officers, this game allows you to experience a variety of police situations, from mundane parking tickets and traffic controls, to car chases, stopping robberies or assaults in progress, and investigating various crime scenes in different interior and exterior locations. The progression system is also great, as the game unlocks new features (e.g. new missions, cars, weapons or equipement) as long as you progress. For this price, it is certainly worth a buy as it can be replayed to infinity and beyond. Highly recommended for police fans.
LONG REVIEW: I don't understand the negative reviews for this game. The game offers a much more complete and rich experience than any other police simulator. I hesitated to buy it because of the negative reviews, but now that I got it I actually find this much more fun and replayable than any other similar games, because of the very rich and varied gameplay, which allows you to experience any aspect of police patrol duties. In particular, the game was developed by the same team as Police Simulator Patrol Officers, which is a sort of 'soft-reboot' of this game. And yet, to me this is much more complete, enjoyable, and long-lived than Patrol Officers. Also, unlike Patrol Officers, this game is more based on US policing than European policing. It's much less procedural/administrative and more action-based. However, the good thing is that you can still play very procedurally if you wish to, but there is a lot of action if you like that.
PATROL SHIFT SYSTEM: You start as a rookie police officer (male or female, no customization) and you can climb the police ranks by completing patrol shift after patrol shift. Every patrol shift lasts around 45 min in real time (8 hours in-game). You can be assigned (randomly) to either a day or a night shift (but if you don't like what you are assigned, just end the shift and ask for a new shift until you get the time you want). Before starting your shift you can choose an overarching mission for the shift which you are free to complete at any time during the shift or ignore altogether. Such background missions include the identification and arrest of particular wanted suspects or traffic and parking checks. In addition, during a shift, you can stop any citizen or car for a check and issue fines or arrest suspects if any irregularity is found. You can also answer the calls from dispatch, which are extremely varied since the start of the game.
RADIO CALLS: This is one of the best elements of the game as calls are incredibly varied. They include:
- car chases of all sorts (escaping robbers, drunk drivers, stolen vehicles);
- stopping robberies, assaults, gang fights, and terrorist attacks in progress;
- investigating past robberies in a variety of interior and exterior locations (supermarkets, convenience stores, diners etc);
- identifying and arresting suspects (e.g. intoxicated people);
- identifying stolen vehicles parked in town;
- and many more.
I have played for more than 20 hours and I still get calls that I have never heard before!
CITY/OPEN WORLD: outdoor and indoor environments are beautifully designed and the feel 'alive'. There are various districts including any kind of environment - downtown, industrial areas, port, beach, highway etc. Missions take place indoor or outdoor and all the locations are truly atmospheric and realistic. E.g., there are small banks or bigger banks, with different floors/rooms to explore. City districts are much more distinctive than in Patrol Officers: you can really familiarise with the city, be able to easily recognise landmarks and orient yourself (you also have a map and GPS).

PROGRESSION: you get points for every duty you successfully complete (i.e. random checks, radio calls, or background missions), but you lose points for any abuse of your powers (e.g. arresting or shooting innocent people, issuing unjustified tickets). A conduct point system penalises you for such violations - however, this is much more reasonable and relaxed than Police Simulator Patrol Officers. As a result, it never feels unfair or frustrating. You start with some basic equipment, including breathalyzer, torch, tazer, traffic vest, smartphone (for taking pictures), and a classic Ford Crown Victoria. But as long as you accumulate points, you will be given access to more cars - an SUV and the Dodge Charger - and equipment (e.g. bulletproof vest) and weapons (e.g. handgun and shotgun). Moreover, increasing your score will result in promotions, allowing you to move to a higher rank in your police department. This is also more realistic than Patrol Officers, as you don't just 'level up' but you get a proper new rank (probationary officer, officer I, officer II, sergeant, lieutenant and captain). Apparently, when you become captain you have the ability to freeroam, repeat missions and keep on duty after your shift ends - but I haven't reached that rank yet.
DRIVING: This is one of the most exciting aspects of the game. The driving system is much smoother and more enjoyable than in Patrol Officers. To begin with, a variety of cameras is available - not only the traditional chase, cockpit, and bonnet, but also two cinematic cameras: a top-down isometric cam and a front wheel cam. This is very helpful to handle different situations, but also to make the experience more immersive (I love watching my cruiser quietly patrolling the streets during the night shift with the top-down cam and I love the front wheel cam when I rush to a crime scene).
The camera I use the most is the cockpit camera as this is very realistic and truly helps immersion. Unlike in Patrol Officers, your cars in this game are equipped with a computer (a mobile data terminal) with which you can scan vehicles and pedestrians around you. The system will tell you all the details of the vehicles/persons including their criminal records. This is very handy when on the lookout for suspects. In the cockpit cam you can rotate your view to look around, which is very helpful for driving.
FLAWS: there are some bugs and the siren system is clunky. There are various sirens (wail, yelp, and 2 piercers), but to activate one you need to cycle through them all. However, this is not a major setback: I generally pre-set my favorite siren, so it's ready to go at the next call.
