Origins is a playable short that takes place in the city of Metropolis, where humans and robots coexist under a shaky social system that separates the haves and have nots. After an explosion in Metropolis, you’ve arrived on the scene as the lead detective. You’ll turn on your microphone to question witnesses, uncover the narrative, and crack the case. Characters respond to you in real time with unscripted dialogue and fluid emotions, based on your inquiries.
All of the characters in Origins are powered by artificial intelligence. Origins is a case study created by the team at Inworld to show how developers can incorporate AI NPCs into their game narrative and experiences.

Instead of focusing on the crime scene, I started bullying and harrasing some girl. Just to start explaining the whole lore of breaking bad to her, and ignoring the whole mission. Like any proper detective should.

Me: Do you like your chicken with or without the bone
Civi: I'm sorry...are you referring to chicken wings? There was an explosion that just occurred and we should be focused on that!
Me: Chicken wings with or without the bone?
Civi: Fine...I like my chicken wings with the bone...

Met an angry robot who seemed convinced that there was an anti robot movement. I then gas-lit the shit out of him and convinced him that he was asleep and that he needed to wake up. He then had a mental break down followed by him saying he was afraid to wake up, because "what if reality is even worse than this nightmare"?... I think it backfired, because I'm starting to hyperventilate.

Me yelling: "WHAT DO THEY MEAN?"
AI: "what does what mean? are you referring to the incident?"
Me yelling: "The numbers mason, WHAT DO THEY MEAN?"
AI: "oh i get it now, you are referring to a call of duty voice line."
Me: *closes game out and checks windows*

I still can't understand why Google Assistant and Siri suck when we have already things like this...
This tech demo is absolutely mind boggling.
My concern at this point is: how is our voice data used by this tech demo?
I've seen no privacy policy or anything like that.

1972: Pong. 1996: Super Mario 64. 2023: Inworld Origins...
Not quite. But I feel like I've just played the first tech demo of something that will, in a few years, be ready for prime-time and absolutely mind-blowing.
At its core, Inworld Origins is just a clever joining up of voice recognition, generative AI, and AI voices. None of those individual pieces is great in this tech demo - the voice input is so-so, the AI voice is OK, the sentences generated by the LLM are OK but have that distinctive ChatGPT feel about them. You can almost hear the cogs grinding as your text is processed by the server and sent back to you - it doesn't feel like an entirely natural conversation.
But when you put that all together, and join it up in a small 3D scene, it ... doesn't quite catch fire, not yet. But there are sparks. There are little moments of surprise, even if they're accidental, such as when a character seems to take a deep sigh before answering. You realise you really can just talk to anyone, about anything, and each character in the scene - even background NPCs - have a whole life and opinions that you can ask about.
I talked to a bystander robot, expecting nothing special, and discovered that she was trying to get to her job at the factory but was sad that the police roadblock had stopped her. A minor backstory, but a backstory nonetheless. I can't help but imagine what this would be like applied to an entire city of NPCs.
It's a great tech demo. It's not much more than that, right now, but I am excited to see where this ends up.

The Policewoman: "Do you know who placed the bomb"?
Me: "Yes, it was me"
P: "This is a serious crime. And the town does not treat people who disturbe the peace kindly."
M: "People like me?"
P: "Oh no no no, I didnt ment to imply that I was talking about you. I apologise."
10/10 would cause a terrorist bombing again
