non-binary

“non-binary” is a game in three acts that blends bullet hell and storytelling to bring you into the lives of two non-binary people.
you will accompany Elisa or Luca from childhood to adulthood, experiencing with them frustration and joy, discovery and change.
“non-binary” features two different paths: one for a character socially defined as female and the other, male.
at the beginning of the game, the character will be randomly assigned to you.
at the end of the game, you will be able to retrace their story or live that of the other protagonist.
we recommend that you experience both stories: by combining personal experiences and the testimonies of those who have supported us, we have created two very different paths. the lives of non-binary people are as varied and complex as those of anyone else. that’s why the game doesn’t aim to tell everyone’s story, but only a small glimpse into a complex world.
if you are a non-binary person and you are going through a bad time, remeber: you’re not alone 💛🤍💜🖤
many countries have LGBTQIA* associations that can provide support.
if you’d like to share in the comments those active in your country, it will make it easier for those who may need them to find them.

a very short game (took me 30 minutes to play both routes for the first time) but a powerful one, especially if you're non-binary (or LGBTQ+ really) and have had similar experiences with being forced to comply to gender norms for no reason other than "because that's life (huh?)".
i'm seeing a lot of reviews saying the game made them cry, but sadly i can't say likewise.
my entire mood while playing this was "♥♥♥♥ yeah im a boygirl, are you gonna cry about it? piss and ♥♥♥♥ your gender-assigned clothes or something?" so i can't really say if this game will pull on your heartstrings or not, you'll have to play for yourself (psstt, did i mention you can finish the game in 30 minutes? did i also mention that it's free?) :3<
some things i liked !!
i think it's great that the moment you hit "start" the character you play as (AFAB or AMAB) is randomised!! really drives home the whole point of "these strangers want to control you based on something you didn't even choose", and also give you a new (but similar!!) experience whether you yourself are AMAB or AFAB.
my favorite part was when the AMAB protagonist (spoiler?) called out their brother like "come up with new insults other than slurs, you ain't original and you're not making sense if you say you love me"
also yes, this game uses slurs every now and then so be warned
some things i didn't like ??
the only "bad" aspects of this game i can think of are:
- at times you don't know who is talking. both stories feature the same characters, but even after realising that i still had trouble keeping up with names. this didn't really hinder my playthrough, there aren't that many characters, it's more of a pet peeve
- both stories are very short and basic at times. this could be a pet peeve to some, but to me personally it wasn't. i think this allows anyone playing to see themselves as the protagonist, and the situations portrayed are eerily universal. i had situations from both routes that made me clutch my pearls and say "omg this happened to me once", and just because they're short doesn't make them any less impactful
most bad reviews are from sad sad hetero cis folk who throw tantrums when something doesn't fit into their neat little boxes, hoping a swift recovery for them 🙏🙏
keep slaying on the haters, dear darling enbies (and queers!!) !! they're just jealous of your pride🖤💜🤍💛
AND REMEMBER, YOU'RE NOT ALONE 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
