Night Call

A mysterious serial killer stalks the streets of modern-day Paris. The body count rises, and the police are no closer to catching the culprit. You are a taxi driver and survivor to the killer’s most recent attacks, having barely escaped with your life. You have seven nights to help find the killer, or the police will pin it on you. These next few shifts will be far from ordinary or safe… Night Call is a non-linear, narrative-driven noire investigation game. You are no detective, but you do have a gift. Around you, people feel more at ease. They talk. They share their thoughts, their emotions, their stories… their secrets. To passengers, you are more than just a driver; you are also a friend, a confidant, a shrink. A voyeur catching a glimpse under the masked but very real lives throughout the City of Light. And you’ll need to play these roles well if you want to catch the killer. Use the limited time you have available each night to gather clues while earning money to pay your bills. Night Call is a noir-themed cab-driving game with a crime-solving plot. We are a night shift taxi driver in Paris who has survived an attack from a notorious serial killer. Just as we come out of the hospital and try to get back to our normal routine, we get blackmailed by a cop to be an informant for the police and gather clues on the serial killer by talking to customers and visiting other informants.
So the game really consists of two key gameplay aspects: one part of it is gathering clues and solving the case, and the other part is in picking up customers, engaging in small talk with them, and making a living.
Regarding the investigation, there are 3 separate serial killer cases we can choose from at the start, although the way each one starts is exactly the same. The only thing differs is the plot and the list of suspects. But otherwise everything else is the same. I enjoyed the overall presentation and the stories behind each case as they were intriguing and pulled me in. However, I feel that making each one take on exactly the same pattern is a huge missed opportunity, because each case could've been executed differently. As of right now, if you've done one case, the other two will play out exactly the same way - you get almost killed by the killer, then forced into the investigation by the cop (with the exactly the same conversation too), you then gather clues for 6 in-game nights, then you decide which suspect is the culprit, and then you do the final mission in exactly the same way each time but with a different dialogue. Moreover, you have to start the game anew each time, rather than continuing from where you left off. Not sure why this approach was taken. I think it would've been much more immersive if we could do the next two cases right after finishing the first one, as part of the same story arc rather than them all feeling like alternative universe stories.
I would've also preferred if there was more interaction regarding the clues we gather. When we gather clues and interact with police reports, the clues automatically appear on our investigation board and automatically get linked to the suspects. In this regard too, I wish there was more player agency here - letting us look at the reports ourselves, pick out important information, and link it to the appropriate suspect. As of right now, the clues are mostly pretty vague, we don't even get to see the names of the victims (only hear them mentioned in brief dialogues here and there), and a lot of the clues are contradictory to each other with no way to distinguish which is true and which isn't (e.g. one clue might say the killer is over 1.80 metres in height and another might say they're under 1.80 metres in height, or one might say the killer is a female, and another would say it's an elder male).
Aside from serial killer investigation, we spend a great deal of time doing our regular taxi job and picking up customers. In part this is important because we need to earn money, because if we run out of money at the end of the night, we get fired and it's game over. I played on normal difficulty, and generally in my experience, the money dwindles each day, but if you do some customers each day, you shouldn't really run out over the course of all 6 nights. So the normal difficulty is nicely balanced and doesn't feel too hard.
The customers each have their own stories to tell us. Most of them feel like real people, so kudos to the devs on that. Some of the conversations raise important issues, although there is perhaps a bit too much politics in some of them, presented in a one-sided manner and lacking any subtlety whatsoever. So if a left-leaning political spin that lacks subtlety puts you off, you might want to avoid the game. I personally don't mind political themes in games, so long as they make you think.
Now where I might disagree with most reviewers is that I didn't particularly feel that the customer interaction was the better part of the game than the murder investigation. To me talking to the customers got repetitive and tedious pretty fast as many of the stories felt too banal and inconsequential, having no effect on the overarching plot at all. I think it would've been better if we could befriend the customers and they help us out in our investigation (one or two such customers did come up, but it's not enough really as majority had no relation to the plot at all). At times you get interrupted while driving to your next customer with some vision of a ghost or some other paranormal event, which felt a bit of out of place too and can sometimes be annoying, especially if it's a scene you've seen before already in the previous investigation.
Getting a chance to pick up our suspects as customers was a great idea, however, as we got a chance to get to know the suspects better on a personal level, which helped with the investigation. Actually I would've preferred if more customers were done this way and relating to the overall plot.
The visual style is pretty great. It has a stylish noir look to it, and the character art and presentation is also quite good in a sort of retro way, where they flick between a handful of specific poses as they talk to you. The music was also really great and providing a nice chill atmosphere during our night drive, and getting intense during the more dangerous moments. There was one track I especially enjoyed very much, which had a nice electronic vibe to it and which kept gradually building up as it went on. There's no voice acting in the game, but I didn't feel that it was particularly necessary.
Generally I enjoyed the game and each investigation intrigued me and kept me trying to guess which suspect was the killer. The stories behind each investigation were interesting, just wish the overall execution and player involvement was better. The customer stories were also fine, though as I mentioned above, most were irrelevant to the main story and felt too banal for my liking. I hope if the devs make another game like this in the future or if they decide to add more investigations, that the pattern of how the investigation goes changes a bit and there's more interaction on behalf of the player. I'd recommend the game as I think it is pretty good, though probably best to get it on a discount.

I bought the game on sale; I would recommend doing the same.
I enjoyed it quite a bit, though it doesn't offer much replay value once you have played through the three story lines. As others have said, it can be a bit repetitive. Your clients' stories were often interesting and engaging, but sometimes disturbing (which the game warns you of beforehand, and didn't bother me).
If they offer DLC for the game, I would buy it (assuming it was reasonably priced), because I would like to return to the world and characters of the game.

Night Call is a visual novel-taxi-driving-investigation game that has well written characters and honestly not much else. I liked it, but it only just barely ekes into a recommendation. The user interface can be buggy at times, refusing any input except exiting to a main menu, which happened several times to me. The overarching story of finding the serial killer who attacked you during one of your rides isn't very interesting, as I don't feel like it's well implemented, as I didn't feel like there was any sort of strong gotcha moments that would expect for an investigation game. What IS well done, however, are the stories told by the passengers - stories of love, loss, lies, identity, sacrifice, and much more. This game certainly isn't for everyone, but if you're interested in what I can simply down to as a collection of short stories, this is a nice game to read.

Absolutely amazing detective thriller. Interacting with passengers felt almost as rewarding as solving the murders. My time on record has almost 8 hours, but I spent many more outside trying to connect the dots between evidence and killers. Highly recommend.
Played on Steam Deck using Proton GE 14, great experience. That said, Proton GE 10 froze occasionally, and Proton 7 and Experimental could not properly display the cutaway shots while driving passengers (generic test pattern image displayed).

The best noir game I've played in a while. The interactions with passengers are just brief glimpses into lives other than the player character's, who has his own problems. The deduction aspect of the game is relatively light, but definitely replicates the feeling of piecing together a mystery.
