Nekokami – The Human Restoration Project
Start an epic yet relaxing world-building adventure with Nekokami!
Architect beautiful, cozy planets in a far-future where Cats rule the universe. Befriend wondrous and whimsical spirits of nature. Restore and manage extinct Humans. With Cats in charge, what could POSSIBLY go wrong?
In Nekokami, you will:
- Create beautiful worlds of natural habitats and human settlements with strategic, or spontaneous, placement of tiles in a unique hand-drawn-like art style.
- Craft infinite planets with procedurally generated challenges. Pursue your own creative desires, or rise in rank in Nekokami Co., your employer, by creating worlds that beat expectations.
- Follow an epic, whimsical yet heartwarming story of Human-Cat friendship, set millennia later in the future.
- Befriend a wide selection of Kami, spirits of the nature and the universe, and see them bring miracles (or totally innocent CATastrophes) to your work.
Nekokami Co. is commissioned to manage planets all over the universe. That’s a LOT of planets! Environment, biomes and rules differ from Star System to Star System.
I did mention the Kami*, right? Technically the spirits are the real fellows creating the worlds. As a Planetary Architect, you are basically borrowing their Creative Energy for your own use. You will need to seek their acceptance and approval. Through their friendship, you will potentially learn the secrets of nature and the arcane laws of universe. Maybe someday you will be able to wield godly powers?
*Kami is actually a Japanese word and concept that roughly translates to “spirits and gods”.
Nekokami is inspired by all-time favorites like Dorfromantik and Townscaper. We wish to push the genre further with a humorous and wholesome story. Please try our unique gameplay in the Prologue!

Games that push their genres and seek to expand the genres even more as they develop are my favorite games. AAA game studios take note.

I played the internship first, liked it, got the full version when it came out. It is still a work in progress. The game is not complete. It is actively being worked on. That being said, the story lines I've seen so far are cool, and the dream garden is fun and relaxing. If you want a single player game you can genuinely relax to, this is a good one. You have to have a little bit of forethought when placing tiles, but its not a dark souls level challenge.

This game is for every person who likes cozy managment but is tired of farming games. It has SOME tabletop Carcassone inspired mechanics, but it's much more fun. The background music is soothing, the characters are extremely lovable and well-written and, if I understand correctly, this indie game was basically developed by just 2 game makers based in Japan.
Had not used the option, and it's still in early stages of developement, but you can toggle difficulty setting for each level, so you can play tag with more or less experienced players on one savefile if you so wish, which is a nice idea, making it fit for long evenings with a loved one / friend / family member.

I usually don't buy EA games but the demo of Nekokami played really well, so I gave it a shot. Gotta say this is a wonderful tiles builder with a lot of content already! Played both on keyboard and controller, each works really well. There are no perfect placements, which makes it more laid-back together with the cute visuals and regular extra resource clicks on the maps. There are other twists (cats!) added that give this game a unique feeling! Overall can recommend for a fair price and looking forward what else the devs will add to the game until full release!

Really excellent game. The art is beautiful, the dialogue is cute and fun, the gameplay is super addictive. An incredibly impressive project from a studio of two. So excited for the next update!

Nekokami is a nice variation of the hex-tile-matcher genre, but it is obvious that its focus is quite different. From the start of the game a major difference for me was the fact that the areas of some biomes (like forests and flower fields) are limited in size and there is no perfect matching bonus. There are also settlements that work differently from other tile and I feel that they are quite an important part of the game.
I find the prevalent Japanese stylings and indie aesthetics sweet. The colours are luscious and vibrant, so it is very pleasant to look at the field.
I still have much to discover in this game and it is becoming one of my favourites.

Nekokami is a delightful game, not the first tile-based builder like this, but the Kami story element I find silly and very enjoyable. There can be some strategic elements especially on hard, but generally this is a chill game, and the graphics are pleasant, but not mind blowing.
With how much is unlocked so far it is well worth the price, I would happily grab it even for $30, and more on full release, but please note this is only partially released here.
9/10 as it is, I would tweak a few things, but I have loved the 13 hours spent so far, and I will play a few more Dreambuilds while I eagerly await the full release :)
