Nanoui * 6/10
A platforming action RPG made with a brand new engine set in a classic medieval-fantasy world. Will it break through the long list of other games to make its own name? I don't know, but I can see potential through its raw gameplay.
INTRO. What is Nanoui about?
Narrator tells us a story. A tale about Nanoui, a powerful book left from the most powerful wizard of the kingdom to protect it from evil forces, has been stolen. Now you (and your friends, if you want to play cooperatively) must start the quest for the book's pages to restore the Book itself and save the kingdom. Simple, right?
GRAPHIC. Engine And Artistic aspects.
Let's talk about the most interesting aspect about this game which is its own engine (Phoesion Game Engine). It is definitely capable of wonderful effects and lightings, and inspired settings as well, starting with a castles's colored glass windows, villages, forests, caves and so on.
However it's not the miracle engine as it has mid gpu requirements and barely runs at 30fps on my laptop with lowest settings at 720p, and I had to run it on my desktop system to see what the game actually is capable of. Not to mntion the everlasting troubles of fullscreen (not working) and borderless windowed (always working and always the second choice).
SOUNDTRACK. Themes and Accompaniments.
Music is definitely a good work as it has good slow melodies perfectly sitting in this fantasy setting and giving the game some character.
GAMEPLAY. How does it work?
Nanoui is a platform action game with a few RPG elements, you simply move and jump along the corridor and you have to swing your sword or cast your spells on enemies while you slide and dodge in depth. RPG elements are very simple, you can unlock new swords and spells to equip, different moves, potions and improve your general stats.
Cool feature is the fact you can play in coop with 3 friends making up a team of 4. More interesting is the fact you can play both online or in shared screen.
LAST NOTES. What doesn't work?
Besides the fullscreen bug and the engine requirements the most dubious aspects are in gamplay itself.
First, your swords and abilities are limited and there's no weapons/spells toloot nor an inventory to manage giving this aspect a very restricted nature with unlockable abilities/weapons.
Then, the true action side of the game, the one that should be the most involving, is kind of restricted as well as it seems quite slow. Even the normal swings have very long cooldown times and when you hit enemies they fall down, won't receive any damage, get up and while they get up can be smashed down again, making them easily and slowly defeated.
TL;DR. Pros And Cons
+++PROs+++
ART. The Engine, Music and levels definitely have some grace on their side, with cool effects, pleasant and fitting tunes and inspired locations.
---CONs---
GAMEPLAY. It definitely is playable but seems quite limited and slow. The game has potential but if the purpose is to create an intuitive platform with few RPG elements, then Trine did a way better job (with even less RPG elements).
I played this game on this machine:
Laptop Lenovo Z50
Intel Core i5-4210U
8Gb RAM DDR3
GeForce 840M/Intel HD Graphics 4400
Windows 10 Home x64

A classic hack and slash that reminds old masterpiece like Gauntlet or Golden Axe in 3d graphics.
I must say this gam,e has much potential with some flaw and needs some improvisement or balance, but can be really entartaining , especially in coop with friends. If you intend to buy it to play in solo, i say that experience will be inferior and maybe the game will risk to bore you.
Graphic
As an indie production, i must say that graphic is pretty good and clean. The performance is well optimized and in fights against many monster didn't have fps issues. Maybe the graphic appareance of the main characters can be improved, i think they are not really detailed but during the game rarely you will notice that.I also liked the painting-style graphics used for the introduction.
Sound
Classic fantasy soundtrack with good voice acting of the narrator in the prologue. I see much attention in this aspect. The music of the levels are nice and suggesting and i enjoyed them during my gameplay.
Performance
As i wrote before, the game is pretty frenetic and in fights against monster didn't have performance issues. The fps is pretty fluid and will not ruin your experience. The controls are pretty responsive as you would expect from an action game that reminds old school games.
I had some problem at the beginning to start the game because of an issue with the shadows settings. After a quick question and response with the developers i solved the problem.
Gameplay
The game basically is an hack and slash where you can choose between 4 tipologies of characters, everyone with his identity, his pros and cons. At the moment i tried only the barbarian and the mage, two different classes to test the balance. Every choice doesn't seem to be unbalanced or too much flawed.
After every level you can upgrade your character in classic rpg style and you can choose to invest your exp in different stats. That's a pretty much interesting feature and never haved in an action game. Maybe i must say that after 6-7 levels you have many exp to spend and your character can be too much overpowered. I suggest to revise the exp gain.
In addition, i didn't find any difficulty option and i suggest developers to introduce some hardcore option. I must say, also in solo campaign, i didn't find the gameplay too much hard and i am pretty sure that this product can be more challenging and satisfying.
The game, i must warn you, is intended to be played in coop. I have played 2 hours in solo campaign and 1 hour in local coop with a friend. The solo campaign risk to be a bit boring and repetitive , while the coop experience becomes more funny. Actually i didn't have the occasion to test it in multiplayer coop.
If you are looking for a frenetic hack and slash to play with friends, this is the game for you.

To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised with the graphic quality of this game, especially because it is an indie title. However, this isn't the only aspect that stood out to me. First off, I really enjoyed how the soundtrack matched the medieval setting and liked the nod to classical storytelling at the beginning of the game, with its "sage" voiced narrator.
Aesthetically, there were plenty of features I liked: from the art to the environmental and monster design. From the very beginning, you can tell there was a lot of attention put to every single detail in this game, which everyone will notice as soon as they start playing.
Gameplay wise, this game is a mix of a hack & slack with a few classic RPG dynamics (such as leveling up and picking a class to master), it has smooth controls and I haven't had any technical issues yet.
I am really glad I gave this game a chance and added it to my collection.
