Mudborne is a laid-back nature sim game about breeding & collecting frogs! Visited in your dreams by a mysterious deity, you begin a journey to help rediscover Her lost children.
- Finally reach your life goals and become an actual frog!
- TINY LITTLE FROGS YOU CAN CATCH AND CHASE
- Find and collect different mushrooms to help buff (or debuff) your frogs
- Play god and manipulate your frogs genetics to find new species

Mudborne spawned as a small week-long gamejam, #FletchFest, organised by FletchMakes!
The result is the game you can play for free over on with music by Mothense! 😀
I’ve always joked about making “APICO but frog”, but it’s never been much more than that – with the gamejam theme of “pond” however it seemed like a good opportunity to make it a reality!
With Mudborne I wanted to play more with the idea of direct manipulation & min/max-ing of genetics to find new species (rather than just slapping bees together), as well as some more interesting nature mechanics – while still bringing the same menu management & crafting minigame vibes you all know and love (along with all the learning I’ve had making APICO!)
I’ve got lots of ideas for this concept and would love to turn this into a more fleshed out demo and maybe even a full game if people are interested, so if you are maybe give it a lil wishlist??

Süßes Spiel besonders für Leute die Frösche mögen. Jedoch auch nicht ganz einfach.

Ein süßes "kleines" Indie-Spiel, alles in allem.
+ macht Spaß, eine nach und nach immer vielfältigere Froschwelt zu kreieren und zu sehen, wie die Teiche sich mit den verschiedensten Arten füllen
+ Geschichte um doch sehr menschliche Frösche und Teichmütter süß, die nasse Welt ist mal was anderes (wenn auch nicht außergewöhnlich)
+ angenehmer Grad an Witzigkeit: die Beschreibung der einzelnen Arten ist sehr kreativ; die deutsche Übersetzung sehr gut (einzige Ausnahme war für mich die Beschreibung einer Froschvariante, die für mich keinen Sinn ergeben hat)
+ obwohl manchmal langatmig (s.u), ist es oft auch befriedigend, einen Genetikübergang hinbekommen zu haben (musste mir dann doch einen Zettel danebenlegen)
+ vor allem am Ende ein tolles Gefühl der Komplettierung
+ keine technischen Probleme im Spiel, auch wenn ich mir nicht sicher bin, ob das Auftauchen der Insekten immer sinnvoll geregelt ist
o keine Genetik wie z.B. in Planet Zoo, wo es um wenige Eigenschaften geht, die aber komplexer zusammenwirken, sondern eher ein Zahlenrätsel, das man lösen muss; hatte da andere Erwartung
- manchmal bin ich doch von Pixel-Grafik genervt, wenn es intuitives Bewegen verhindert
- zum Teil langatmig, wenn man bestimmte Kombinationen züchten muss: manchmal keine intelligenten Abkürzungen möglich, sodass man hintereinander mehrere Zuchtvorgänge durcharbeiten muss, was Zeit braucht: kein Spiel für eilige Action-Fans; die Zeit für die einzelnen Vorgänge hätte man mit der Zeit im Spiel verkürzen können

Mudborne ist ein charmantes Wohlfühl-Spiel, das gemütliche Atmosphäre mit surprisingly tiefgründigem Management mischt. Man baut seinen Teich wieder auf und züchtet Frösche – das Genetik-System dahinter macht echt süchtig und ist überraschend komplex.
Das ist top:
- Wunderschöne Pixel-Art.
- Total entspannter Soundtrack.
- Zuchtmechaniken, bei denen man wirklich strategisch planen muss.
Das nervt etwas:
- Die Menüführung ist besonders mit Controller oft fummelig.
Fazit: Wenn du auf „Cosy Games“ wie Apico stehst und mal abschalten willst, ist das Spiel perfekt. Ein kleines, feines Ding, in dem man sich wunderbar verlieren kann. 9 von 10 Punkten.
