Don't listen to the old reviews, Mothergunship is finished, and imo similar to RoboQuest. It's just full of silly jokes and puns, and gameplay-wise, I assure you the first 30 hours are great. However it can be hard to learn the curves, and other mechanics like building your guns.
Even if you have a lot of options for the guns, it may be better to use ALL of them since the enemies are varied. Also remember that it was made in 2018, and was released very unpolished.
But still after all of these years of updates I can safely say that it is finished and a fun-in-its-own-sauce roguelike.
