The country is in peril as President Michael Wilson defends the nation against a full-scale rebellion led by Vice-President Richard Hawk and the mechanized legions he commands. As the 47th President of the United States, it is your sworn duty to take your country back by any means necessary and end this unjust coup d'etat! Battle in your advanced mech - armed to the teeth - across iconic American landscapes including the Brooklyn Bridge, the Grand Canyon, and the front steps of the White House.
FromSoftware originally released Metal Wolf Chaos in December 2004, appearing exclusively on the original Xbox and only in Japan. The game went on to become somewhat of a legend as it was hard to acquire and even harder to play outside of Japan with most fans experience of the game through YouTube videos and the occasional screenshot. Devolver Digital and FromSoftware have partnered together with developer General Arcade to modernize Metal Wolf Chaos with updates to the game including upgraded visual fidelity, refined controls and gameplay, a new save system, and 4K + 16:9 support for modern displays.

10/10 would blow up stuff as the president in a wolf mech suit in the name of freedom and justice again.

"Mech America Great Again!" is the sort of elevator pitch you expect to find in a course named "you can learn to pitch any idea", or if you were trying to make a joke about how badly the Japanese understand America.
15 years ago, FromSoftware had a moment of "Whoosh", and sincerely delivered what is possibly the least-marketable idea, on the least-marketable platform (original Xbox, Japan-exclusive) and should have ended up with a footnote in an article years later about the fall and fall of Xbox in Japan.
Instead, a hidden playable demo on a US magazine disk, plus the application of mod-chips and downloads, plus the novelty of a Japanese-only release of an Xbox game with full English dub, and what a dub it is, produced a cult following, and strength of meme that is frankly ridiculous for a game that was never released outside Japan.
So now you know why you are looking at a review of a 16 year old game re-release (not remaster).
And has it stood the test of time? Yes. Having played the original release via mod-chip in 2005, and having played through the re-release today, it's precisely the same level of mindless, nonsensical joy that it always was.
It doesn't ask you to think too hard, and I suggest you don't try. It's Metal Wolf Chaos, not Metal Wolf Sensible.
Grab this game, shoot a lot of stuff, and believe in your own justice.
Time spent was 8.5 hours to complete all the missions, with strong recall of the game from 2005, and using a guide to hunt down a few missing collectables. That leaves the New Game+ modes, and the weapon collecting, and a bunch of achievements undone, so there's still a lot left to get back into. It probably would have taken me longer, except I focused all my research on getting Machine guns to max, and then bought the top two, and those carried me through the entire game. I'm sure it took a lot more time in 2005, I remember failing a lot more when I didn't know what I was doing.
Now I can just hope for a re-release of [email protected]
