Metal Slug X is a "revised" version of this title, it includes different weapon placements, some different times of day, just in general is a different game for very subtle reasons, but enough reasons, that end up becoming a significant change.
I personally got this game for fairly cheap on a sale on one hand to complete my collection of MS games, as well as to check the differences; turns out this is the game I played as a child at the arcades and not the revised version like I thought. I personally like this version a lot more, it seems to be made with more care and I like the different times of day, the gore seems to be better implemented, and finally, the actual choose your character screen has the animations from the arcade; so when you choose Marco he squints his eyes, while Tarma gets a bugger out of his nose.
I know they're silly things to some, but generally, I prefer this version with those changes and its original soundtrack -something that also got altered in the "X" version of the game-, this version also doesn't have any slowdowns and it seems to have as many options as Metal Slug 1, X, and 3, so you can play with different filters, widescreen res, etc. Only issue I had with technical aspects, had to do with the keybinds, I had to change the player 2 keys and quit all the way into the main menu for the changes to actually take place; then I could change some of my player 1 keys the game wouldn't otherwise allow me to change because they were set for player 2's actions.

Metal Slug 2 is even better than its big brother. While the first game took place in a Vietnam-inspired setting, MS2 takes you to some Middle East-alike environments where you get to shoot mummies in an underground temple, explode zombies in an abandoned subway and even destroy aliens in a secret military base! You even get to ride a camel armed with machine guns! What else do you need? A laser gun? Fine, you can have that too!

METAL SLUG 2
pros:
//fast game with modern day graphics with easy controls that moves from location A to B to C and so on
//good amount of action and special effects
cons:
//a lot of difficult battles/boss battles
//some overpowered enemies
//some enemies have unfair attacks
//some difficult platforming
//diagonal shooting doesn't seem to work
//could use more powerups
//too many enemies constantly spawn
//good game

This series has some of the best pixel art ever created.
A noticeable improvement over the previous title,
both in terms of game-feel & also the ability to play as Fio, who is best girl.

after playing ms1, have to say i don't think this one is better, the emulation is decent-good (yeah you can get better experience with 3rd party applications), had no issues, and even when the game itself is good, it has some things that bothers me, the amount of bullet hell in this sequel is insane, i can beat ms1 without using any continue, but in this one i died like 30 times, also most of the time i was using the single pistol cause the power up drops are so low, still the game its a classic, the pixel art its absolutely gorgeous, the music is so good, the game mechanics and controls are good, the game can be beat in 45 minutes or so. it may not be my favorite metal slug, but still its a great game. cool thing snk still selling this classics, not like sega about to de-list their classic games :(

Great fun and way better port than the first one (Less slow down and sfx/bgm problem), but some areas are pretty hard with how many enemies the game just throw at you like it's expect you to play with your friend.
