I'm a very wary person when it comes to early access farming sims. You can see by the number of products in my library, I have a lot of stuff and have been burned before! But luckily, this one is a good egg.
Melody of Seasons is a typical farming sim where you inherit your grandfather's farm and start to expand upon the rough plot of land to create something thriving for your community. This game takes that basic formula and adds small touches of personality wherever possible.
A few examples of this:
- Your crops can be attacked by crows. But it can also be attacked by weeds and flies, requiring you to do tiny minigames and pay attention to your land to keep your crops alive.
- You can go into the mine, and there is an elevator to make you able to revisit floors easily. But instead of just getting the elevator for free, you have to "repair" it with some ore or ingots. This made me think before I entered the mine and keep extra materials in my inventory, just in case I managed to reach the next elevator.
- You have stamina, but foraging gives your character "forage energy" which helps you regain that stamina more quickly without eating anything. You can also go to "beautiful" spots in the town for your character to stand in awe, and also regain stamina.
The NPCs are very important for me when it comes to life/farming sims. If the NPCs bore me, I'm not going to play. The NPCs I met in this game had some unique personalities, from a grumpy engineer who thinks city folks can't run farms to an adorable local cafe owner who gives herself a mirror pep talk every morning to prepare for the day. The dialogue isn't very in-depth yet, but I see some moments already that have me interested in talking to the characters more.
The art style reminds me of the Gameboy Color, whose colorful graphics that were complex yet simple drew you in constantly as you played your favorite games. It's gorgeous pixel art.
The game has glitches and plenty of room to grow, but I think what is here so far is pretty great. Excited to keep playing and get to the first few events, will update this review as I go!
