Ever worked hundreds of meters beneath the earth, bent down in dark, narrow shafts, hitting coal out of the walls? Probably not. Now you can: The WDR, Germany’s largest public broadcaster, presents the interactive VR experience “Meet the Miner – WDR VR Bergwerk”. With an Oculus Rift, users can experience how dangerous and grueling life of a miner was 100 years ago – feeling what it was like racing down hundreds of meters into the earth in a shaky elevator and mining coal with a virtual pickaxe. Something you will never be able to do in real life again. It is the highlight of a VR/360° project focussing on a dying tradition – the last German coal mines will be shut down at the end of 2018.

A lot of work went into creating this replication of the experience of a coal miner working in Germany 100 years ago.
The only issue is the tools are a little clunky to use, and it's more of an experience than a game.
It's quite short, very well crafted and it's free!

Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers
I did not expect this to be any good, but I was pleasantly surprised. This is a 6-7 minute VR mostly cinematic experience with a some very well done interactions. You will need a roomscale setup, but as long as you can reach just a little more than standing reach, you'll be able to experience everything in this title.
You're basically transported back in time to a day in the life of a miner in Germany, pre-safety regulations. You can choose English or German. You start out with a very good 3D environment where you're looking at a projector showing a brief 2D film of miners in Germany. Then the game starts in full and you're a miner going down into the pits to do your job.
Graphics are well done. This is better than even most paid apps. Just looking at the backdrop or the flame in the lantern is mesmerizing. Awesome 3D modelers worked on this project. The scripted dialogue wasn't the best but it got the job done and the voice actors were decent.
You'll do some simple menial tasks. I dont' want to give away any spoilers but there is an intense ending. Anyways, thank you WDR for this VR experience. This is how it should be done. You guys (media/corps) want people to notice you then bring high quality stuff like this.
Rate 7/10. Yeah, don't bring back Coal!

A short and free experience how dangerous mining was back in the days.
Mostly a film with some parts where you can join the action.
It doesn't hurt to try this one out.

It's a decent experience, a bit short maybe, and gives you a minor glimpse into what it was like in the mine.
It ran pretty smoothly on my PC and it looked good.
As it's free I can certainly recommend it to play it as it doesn't take much of your time.

A short educational VR experience more than a game.
Yet i'm always enjoying more content for the VR platforms especially if it's decent and free.
I'm not so sure though people with a hang to motion sickness wil like that elevator ride.
For everyone else, add it to your "stuff i show people when they are new to VR" list.

It's more of a museum style short educational video than anything else, but it's decent. You go deep into a mine, listen to some corny miner talk and hit stuff with tools. There's some information on the history of mining but it's very minimal. The intent seems to be to give a brief look into the conditions miners were exposed to in the course of their jobs.
It's free and should only take you about 10 minutes to finish. Give it a shot.

This is a very sort game (4-6 mins.) but have alot of Atmospher. It sets the mood just right with dark and most of the lights only comes from Lanterns there had at that time.
I hope to see more work/longer gameplay for this one. Even an full game will be nice to see.
