My favorite scifi video game of all time. Improvements in graphics and movement from the first Mass Effect. A great RPG with characters you'll care about. The story is excellent. The choice making feels like it will have real consequences. I've come back to it several times. I played this on the XBox 360 and also on my PC. The game will draw you back again. Good Linux compatibility through Proton.

The first Mass Effect was a monumental game in the Star Trek simulator genre, the sequel removed all that was mediocre in that game and managed to conceive an even stronger storyline while still lacking Jean-Luc Picard.. The story takes on where the first game ends with a certain twist. You are once again dressed up as Commander Shepard in this narrative RPG adventure with some gunplay and resource management shoehorned in for the sake of it. The talent tree is greatly reduced and even though you still find the classes from the first game the rudimentary skills makes the leveling much more convinient and the gameplay as a whole a bit more streamlined. Gone is the constant micromanaging of your squad in favor of a more action oriented shooting gallery style gameplay. The enemies are still stupid beyond belief but the sheer amount of health and ablative armor they have on the higher difficulty can still make you weep blood.
Taking off from the rather grounded story in the first game that ended in a rather climactic revelation ME2 ups the ante a lot by having a far bigger scope. Most of the choices you made during the first installment will come back to haunt you and even impact your looks to a certain degree. The game starts with a twist and shortly after an encounter with a mysterious shadow cabal that pushes your squad of badass space mercenaries into action yet again. On your romp through the galaxy you encounter old friends and enemies as well as a whole bunch of new intriguing characters and locales. Without further spoiling anything the storytelling is tight as ever and the choices from the first game truly feel meaningful. Mass Effect 2 is a superior game to its predecessor and much like The Witcher series the gameplay between the first game and its sequel are so different that they could easily have been different games. In the end this is an epic experience of great storytelling coupled with satisfying gameplay and a great list of intriguing and likable characters.
There is an argument that you could start up with ME2 right away, and I get it. But half of the thing that makes this game click for me is the legacy. What I did in the first game actually meant something down the line and I truly love that way of tying the storylines together. ME2 is a masterpiece and a definite cinematic gameplay experience. If you have any love whatsoever for Sci-fi this game is a must play, and even if you hate sci-fi, the story is compelling enough to lure the most blackhearted visual novel romantic into its grasp..

It's the best choice-based action RPG I've ever played. Great action, great story, great characters. I consider the Mass Effect trilogy a must-play for anybody who even casually plays video games.

Good game, bad company. Don't waste your money on the deluxe version, the dlc doesn't work.
