Now back home in New Bordeaux, Lincoln is set on escaping a criminal past. But when his surrogate family, the black mob, is betrayed and wiped out by the Italian Mafia, Lincoln builds a new family on the ashes of the old and blazes a path of military-grade revenge through those responsible. Intense gun fights, visceral hand-to-hand combat, white knuckle driving and street smarts will all be needed

I finished Mafia III a few days ago, and it’s not nearly as bad as people claim. It does have flaws, though: the mid-game is extremely repetitive, with nothing but constant stronghold-clearing—just as dull as Ubisoft’s formulaic, assembly-line-style games. There are also plenty of bugs.
Yet the game has its strengths. The gun feel is excellent; even with the repetitive gameplay loop, the combat is really satisfying. The running mechanics are smooth too, and stealth takedowns are clean and crisp. Most notably, the story is well-told. Its narrative style combines flashbacks, cutbacks, and a documentary-style third-person perspective, while also using the viewpoints of an FBI agent, a senator, and a priest to recount past events. These different perspectives explore Lincoln’s motives for his actions and the consequences that followed, allowing us to gain a deeper understanding of Lincoln as a character. When comparing its narrative style to the first two installments, I definitely prefer this one more.
Set in the United States during the Cold War, the game masterfully captures the atmosphere of that era. It also exposes the social tensions and contradictions in America at the time, such as severe racial discrimination, nationalism, and anti-communist movements. For example, you can see signs on the streets that read “No Blacks Allowed” and various slogans against people of color. The DLC storylines focus heavily on the Black civil rights movement, and communist posters are scattered throughout the game world. Meanwhile, from the plot, it’s clear that Donovan and his associates are critical of communism.
There’s also an easter egg at the end: Donovan points out that John F. Kennedy was killed by Mafia members allied with the Marcanos. In real life, there are also theories linking the Mafia to Kennedy’s assassination. Before being elected, Kennedy allegedly sought the Mafia’s help to win votes and promised them favorable policies in return. However, after taking office, Kennedy’s brother—who served as Attorney General—launched a direct and severe crackdown on the Mafia and other criminal organizations. This makes the game’s portrayal of the Mafia’s role in Kennedy’s assassination entirely plausible.
Cold War-themed games are extremely rare, and Mafia III is undoubtedly one that excels at depicting the Cold War era with a strong sense of immersion. I truly believe this game isn’t as bad as online reviews make it out to be; if its gameplay and bugs were fixed, it would definitely be much better.
